5 Keys to Tennis
For Beginning Tennis Players
Introduction
 In this slideshow I will go over what I believe are the 5
most important things in tennis. I have been a tennis
coach for over 10 years and have some valuable
information for anyone wanting to improve their tennis
game. This article specifically targets those who are still
beginners. Most intermediate and all advanced players
will already know each of these keys. Still, anyone can
benefit from implementing them. Enjoy learning and
improving!
1. Watch the Ball!
 This sounds so easy, but for a lot of players it is actually
difficult to watch the ball they entire time.
 We are so caught up on our opponent on the other side
of the net that we lose focus on our side of the net.
 Play the ball, not the opponent.
 Watch the ball hit your strings and keep your head still
through contact.
2. Stay Low!
 Keep those knees bent and stay still (along with not
moving your head and watching the ball).
 This helps cut down unforced errors dramatically
because you will hit the ball much cleaner when you do
this.

 When you do not hit it very cleanly it is almost always
because you lifted up your head and didn't stay down
low long enough.
 Do not lift up through the shot. Stay low.
3. Move Your Feet!
 Don't be lazy and expect the ball to magically be hit
right into your racket.
 You need to keep your feet active by bouncing around
in between shots and always staying on your toes.
 When your heels are on the ground you are flat-footed
and will not be able to move to the next shot as quickly.
 Stay on your toes; move your feet.
4. Finish Your Stroke!
 Your racket follow through must be complete in order to
finish your shot.
 Your follow through should finish over your opposite
shoulder.
 A good racket follow through should also follow through
into the court more.
 Do not cut your stroke short. Reach into the court and
follow through over your shoulder.
5. Stay Calm.
 Keeping your emotions in check is invaluable.
 If your opponent sees you throwing a fit because you just
lot a point they will start to be more confident and most
likely start playing better.
 As you continue to lose your temper, you will lose your
focus. When this happens the match will be over in a
heartbeat.
 Stay calm. Stay relaxed. Stay focused.
The End
 Hope you can benefit from these simple tips! Have fun
playing tennis and always trying to improve yourself!
