Individual Assignment 1:
Building a Business Dashboard
Overview
A business dashboard is a style of reporting that depicts KPIs, operational or strategic information with
intuitive and interactive displays (Turban et al., 2015 p. 380). It is a single screen snapshot of how a
business, department, or process is performing. The design varies considerably from one application
to another, and even between businesses, but a common feature of a dashboard is that it uses graphs,
coloured text, and symbols to show the viewer, at a glance, the current status. A dashboard should
only contain information that actually influences performance. Many dashboards are interactive
because it can be difficult to show every important detail at once.
You are an employee at Australian Electronics Pty Ltd. You have been assigned the task of designing
a report that will be used by managers involved in purchasing, sales, and inventory management.
Your boss, Mary Smith, suggest including at least four (4) ratios. Regarding the ratios, Mary thinks
that Inventory Turnover and Sales Growth are a must.
This is an individual assignment. There is no fixed answer, so be creative!! The spreadsheet must
perform ratio analysis to show the current status of the inventory holdings and sales. Marks are
awarded according to how well the dashboard meets the requirements specified in the rubric.
A data set is supplied with this guide in Moodle (ACC ACF 2400_s2 2017_Inventory Statistics.xlsx). The
Inventory Statistics data set contains four sheets: sales value, sales quantity, the quantity of inventory
on hand, and the quantity purchased. You should use all sheets in your calculations, but may need to
restructure some data on a separate calculation sheet to ensure data is in the format you need.
Instructions on how to build a complex interactive scorecard have been published in different journals
such as the Journal of Accountancy
(http://www.journalofaccountancy.com/issues/2011/feb/20092427.html), but you do not have to
build such a complex system if your spreadsheeting skills are not well developed.
The table below contrasts two different approaches. The example on the left shows 7 ratios in a non-
interactive dashboard, with three graphs and one table of numbers. It is clearly not an inventory
management dashboard, but if the design features included were tailored to the inventory
management context, it would likely earn a pass (providing instructions, the input sheet, and the
calculations sheet are acceptable).
The example on the right, however, is from the Dashboard your Scorecard article. It is also not an
inventory management dashboard and does not show ratios, and so is not acceptable, but illustrates
elements that will earn higher marks:
It is interactive (note the drop-down box in the bottom right graph to select the person shown);
It uses conditional for ...
This document outlines five steps for creating visually persuasive dashboards:
1. Identify key metrics that are imperative to the dashboard's goals.
2. Develop a layout that guides users through the data by grouping related metrics and placing important ones in prominent areas.
3. Provide comparisons and trends for all key performance indicators to give context to the metrics.
4. Design charts and visualizations that are easy to interpret while removing non-essential embellishments.
5. Drive user engagement by allowing interactive exploration of the data through filters and the ability to drill down into details.

The Tools of Quality
When we introduce a particular method of doing a job, it is natural to consider whether the method is appropriate or not. The decision is usually based on past results and experience, or perhaps on conventional methods. Procedures will be most effective if a proper evaluation is made, and on-the-job data are essential for making a proper evaluation.

Quality improvement in manufacturing or services, to be effective, should address the needs of the system as a whole. In this book we have attempted to address quality management from an integrative perspective. This perspective has encompassed the many functional areas of business, including supply chain management, marketing, accounting, human resources, operations, engineering, and strategy. None of these fields of endeavor operate in a vacuum. They are all interrelated and interdependent.
Improving the System
To be successful, a business or organization must balance the needs of these different functional areas around a coherent business vision and strategy. The objective of the system is to satisfy the customer. Customer satisfaction means higher customer retention, which leads to improved profitability.
A quality system (Figure 10-1) uses the business model with a focus on the customer and includes the dynamics of continual improvement, change, planning, and renewal. Continual improvement is necessary for a company to learn to grow. Companies that are unable to adapt find themselves with stagnant cultures and labor forces. Many managers, on discovering that their organization has reached this point, believe they must resort to draconian measures such as layoffs and organizational reengineering to achieve change. If they had pursued continual improvement and learning in the first place, they might not have reached this juncture.

BI solutions can analyze data faster, more efficiently, and accurately from multiple sources. They generate more detailed, wider-ranging, and accurate reports. BI also saves costs through greater efficiency, elimination of inaccurate data, and improved ability to predict trends. While Excel is flexible, BI mitigates issues like lengthy manual operations, reliance on qualified staff, and lack of historical data for comparison. The document provides an example of how a BI solution could improve an organization's item valuation, costs, and yield analysis reporting.

In todays data-driven world, companies are inundated with massive amounts of data. However, raw data in itself is not inherently useful. To extract actionable insights and enable informed decision-making, it must be transformed into an easily digestible formatthis is where data visualization comes into play. Data visualization refers to the graphical representation of data, allowing complex information to be conveyed in a simple, visual format. This is a vital skill for data analysts because effective visuals can highlight patterns, trends, and outliers that might otherwise go unnoticed. As businesses rely on data to shape strategies, the ability to visualize data efficiently is now considered a critical tool for decision-making.

Essential Excel for Business Analysts and ConsultantsAsen Gyczew
油
Excel is the most often used first-choice tool of every business analyst and consultant. Maybe it is not the most fancy or sophisticated one, yet it is universally understood by everybody especially your boss and your customers.
Excel is still pretty advanced tool with countless number of features and functions. I have mastered quite a lot of them during my studies and while working. After some time in consulting I discovered that most of them are not that useful; some of them bring more problems than solutions. On top of that there are features that we are taught at university that are not flexible and pretty time consuming. While working as a business analyst I developed my own set of tricks to deal with Excel I learned how to make my analyses idiot-proven and extremely universal.
I will NOT teach you the entire Excel as it is simply not efficient (and frankly you dont need it). This course is organized around 80/20 rule and I want to teach you the most useful (from business analyst / consultant perspective) formulas as fast as possible. I want you also to acquire thanks to the course good habits in Excel that will save you loads of time.
If done properly, this course will transform you in 1 day into pretty good business analyst that knows how to use Excel in the smart way. It is based on my 12 years of experience as a consultant in top consulting companies and as a Board Member responsible for strategy, improvement and turn-arounds in biggest companies from FMCG, SMG, B2B sector that I worked for. On the basis of what you will find in this course I have trained over 100 business analysts who now are Investment Directors, Senior Analyst, Directors in Consulting Companies, Board Members etc.
I teach step by step on the basis of Excel files that will be attached to the course. To make the best out of the course you should follow my steps and repeat what I do with the data after every lecture. Dont move to the next lecture if you have not done what I show in the lecture that you have gone through.
I assume that you know basic Excel so the basic features (i.e. how to write formula in Excel) are not explained in this course. I concentrate on intermediate and advanced solutions and purposefully get rid of some things that are advanced yet later become very inflexible and useless (i.e. naming the variables). At the end, I will show 4 full blown analyses in Excel that use the tricks that I show in the lectures.
To every lecture you will find attached (in additional resources) the Excel shown in the Lecture so as a part of this course you will also get a library of ready-made analyses that can, with certain modification, be applied by you in your work.

While Excel is flexible, BI mitigates issues like lengthy manual operations, reliance on qualified staff, and lack of historical data for comparison. The document provides an example of how a BI solution could improve an organization's item valuation, costs, and yield analysis reporting.

This document discusses the benefits of using a business intelligence (BI) solution compared to Excel-based reporting. BI solutions can analyze data faster, more efficiently, and accurately from multiple sources. They generate more detailed, wider-ranging, and accurate reports. BI also saves costs through greater efficiency and ability to predict future trends. While Excel is flexible, BI mitigates issues like lengthy manual work, need for qualified staff, and unreliable reports. BI converts and aggregates data to present key information clearly and allows historical comparisons and flexible analysis not possible with separate Excel files.
The Importance of Data Visualization in a Data Analyst Course.pdfAmrita sharma

6 Common Mistakes to Avoid When Creating a Performance Appraisal Dashboard in Excel.docx
1. Introduction:
A Performance Appraisal Dashboard in Excel is a visual tool designed to help
organizations track, analyze, and report on employee performance metrics. It
consolidates performance data into a single, interactive interface, allowing managers
and HR professionals to quickly assess employee performance, identify trends, and
make informed decisions
Common Mistakes To Avoid:
Creating a performance appraisal dashboard in Excel can be a powerful tool for
managing and assessing employee performance, but it's essential to avoid common
pitfalls that can undermine its effectiveness.

(exceltemple.com)
Here are six common mistakes to avoid:
1. Overloading the Dashboard with Too Much Information
Mistake: Including excessive amounts of data and too many KPIs can overwhelm
users and make the dashboard difficult to navigate and interpret.
2. Solution: Focus on the most critical KPIs that align with your performance objectives.
Use clear, concise visualizations to present the most relevant data. Aim for simplicity
and clarity to ensure users can quickly grasp the key insights.
2. Inconsistent Data Formats
Mistake: Using inconsistent data formats (e.g., dates, currencies, percentages) can
lead to errors in data interpretation and analysis.
Solution: Standardize data formats across all sheets and ensure that all entries adhere
to these formats. Use Excel's built-in formatting tools to maintain consistency, such as
defining cell formats and using data validation to enforce data integrity.

3. Lack of Data Validation
Mistake: Allowing unchecked data entry can result in inaccuracies, such as
typographical errors or incorrect data types, leading to flawed analysis.
Solution: Implement data validation rules to restrict the type and range of data that
can be entered. For example, use drop-down lists for categorical data and set limits for
numerical inputs to ensure data accuracy and reliability.
4. Poor Visual Design Choices
Mistake: Utilizing complex, cluttered charts and too many colors can make the
dashboard visually overwhelming and difficult to interpret.
Solution: Follow best practices for data visualization by using clean, simple charts
and a limited color palette. Ensure that each chart has a clear purpose and that the
visual elements are easy to read and understand. Use color sparingly to highlight
important data points or trends.
5. Not Automating Data Updates
Mistake: Manually updating data can be time-consuming and prone to errors, leading
to outdated or incorrect information on the dashboard.
Solution: Use Excel's automation features, such as Power Query and dynamic ranges,
to link your dashboard to data sources and automate updates. This ensures that the
dashboard always reflects the most current data without manual intervention.

6. Ignoring User Feedback and Testing
3. Mistake: Failing to test the dashboard with actual users and not incorporating their
feedback can result in a tool that doesn't meet their needs or is difficult to use.
Solution: Involve end-users in the development process and conduct thorough testing
to identify any usability issues. Collect feedback regularly and make adjustments to
improve the dashboard's functionality and user experience.

Conclusion:
By avoiding these common mistakes, you can create a performance appraisal
dashboard in Excel that is accurate, user-friendly, and provides valuable insights into
employee performance. Regularly review the dashboard to ensure it continues to meet
your organization's needs and adapts to any changes in performance evaluation
criteria.
