Over 90% of the world's population living in low-income countries face water problems, as 1.1 billion people lack access to clean water and 2.6 billion lack sanitation facilities. The number of people without access to clean water in LICs is projected to increase by over 8 times to 1.8 million by 2050, while those without sanitation will increase nearly 47 times to 450,000 unless action is taken. Currently half of hospital beds are occupied by patients with water-related diseases, and waterborne diseases account for over half of all deaths in children under 5 living in LICs.
