The document is a conceptual map for an IS 360 class on literature, film, and the American Dream. It contains images and quotes relating to both the "Land of Nightmares" and "Land of Miracles" that define America. For each nightmare, it shows how individuals and organizations worked to overcome injustice and create positive change, such as schools helping Native American communities and organizations fighting diseases. It argues that by focusing on possibilities rather than tragedies, and supporting those working for good, the country can overcome its dark past and continue leading the world.

In America, freedom and opportunity are
not a guarantee of all things good and
wonderful. Instead, we must all work
toward good, toward wonderful. And along
the way, we make mistakes. However;
For every nightmare, there is a miracle waiting,
For every injustice, there is hope of justice,
For every disappointment, there is a new beginning,
For every mistake, a thousand individuals give
everything to make our world a better place.

Anne Sullivan Macy (1866-1936) was a
woman whose brilliance, passion, and
tenacity enabled her to overcome a
traumatic past. She became a model for
others disadvantaged by their physical
bodies, as well as by gender or class.
Anne was the eldest daughter of poor,
illiterate, and unskilled Irish immigrants,
born in 1866.

graduation from Perkins School for the
Blind, 1886: All the wondrous physical,
intellectual and moral endowments, with
which man is blessed, will, by inevitable
law, become useless, unless he uses
and improves them...If a love for truth
and beauty and goodness is not
cultivated, the mind loses the strength
which comes from truth, the refinement
which comes from beauty, and the
happiness which comes from goodness.

Paul Harris - The Founder of Rotary
Eradicating Polio from the World
At the very first Rotary club meeting Paul Harris, Gustavus Loehr,
Hiram Shorey, and Silvester Schiele met in Chicago and talked about
their personal experiences. At that meeting on February 23rd, 1905,
Harris unfolded his general plan. This was the simple beginning of the
worlds first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, created because
of Harris wish to capture in a professional club the same friendly spirit
he had felt in the small towns of his youth.
The concept of 'Service Above Self' is as alive today in the hearts and
minds of over 1.2 million Rotarians as it was when Harris developed the
idea of a club dedicated to fellowship in community service.

Which Land is Your Land?
Where do you place your attention, your focus, and
is your viewpoint balanced?
IS 360 - Conceptual Map
The freedoms and opportunities of our nation depend upon the beliefs of our citizens,
and the behaviors that result from those thoughts. If we endeavor to right the wrongs
in the areas where we can make a difference, live our lives as examples for others to
do the same, and focus on the possibilities instead of the tragedies, our nation will
continue to lead the world.
The nightmares of history can only be corrected with careful attention to the goodness of
our people, supporting and encouraging those efforts to do the right thing.
