Ergosterol is a C28 sterol that is the most common mycosterol. It is the precursor to vitamin D2 and exposure to UV light converts ergosterol to ergocalciferol. Ergosterol contains a conjugated diene system that reacts with maleic anhydride in Diel's alder reaction to form an adduct. Partial reduction of ergosterol with sodium ethanol yields the dihydro derivative. Ergosterol can also be degraded through oxidation reactions.
3. C 28 sterol
It is commonest mycosterol.
It is precursor for Vit-D2
The exposure of ergosterol to UV
gives ergocalciferol.
It provides route to
progesterone and adrenocortical
harmone.
4. Conjugated diene system
It undergoes Diels
