Penny is a 3 year old blonde Labrador Retriever mix who was assessed at the Kalamazoo County Animal Shelter. She was generally polite and friendly towards strangers but hesitant and shy. Penny pulled on her leash but was not too strong. She was playful once she became more comfortable but easily distracted. The assessment recommends that Penny could do well in a family setting given more time to adjust to new people and situations.

Behavior on Leash
Pulls She'll charge off wherever she wants to go, but she's
little and can't pull all that hard.
Behavior With Strangers
Polite-Friendly Polite sniffing, no jumping observed during
assessment.
Cage Behavior - Activity
Hesitant Exit She was shaking, poor thing. Eventually she calmed
enough for me to get an arm under her and help her
down.
Quiet and calm in cage
Resistant to go in She pulled me all the way down the hallway, then
when I opened her cage door, she realized what was
happening and tried to run back out. Lifting her up
once I got her was easy, but she kept dropping to the
floor to make it difficult.
Cage Behavior - Noise Level
Rarely barks (may be a good choice for apartment
dwellers/working homes)
Cage Behavior-Strangers
Front of cage, with encouragment
Food Bowl
Passed She moved easily with the bowl when I moved it, and
it only took moderate prompting with the assess-a-
hand for her to move her head out of the bowl. She
seemed a little tense when I petted her with the
assess-a-hand, but she did not look back at it.
General Observations
Active She likes to investigate.
Distracted By anything she could sniff.
Gentle
Playful She responded happily when I initiated "tag," even
bounding after me, tail wagging. After this she
seemed more relaxed around me.
Responds She loved treats in her cage, before and after the
assessment, but when we were outside she wasn't too
keen on them.
Shy Rather skittish. Give her a bit to get used to you.

House Broken
Unknown No mess in cage, only #1 outside.
Physical Control - Hug
Easy to handle
Mellow and tractable But with her tail tucked; she was nervous of me at first.
Recommendations
Children She could do well in a family with children, given her
typically calm demeanor. She does seem a little
skittish with new people, but her food bowl activities
were nice and she wasn't too rowdy when playing.
First Impression Give her a bit at the beginning to get used to you and
she'll open up more. She seems a little skittish with
new people, but after playing with her a bit she relaxes
more.
Safety Exam
Date 9-23-13 WMU passed.
Toys
No Interest
Passed W/Reservation She did not care about the toys. She did not like
being hooked up to the wall, she kept trying to run
back out of the garage.
