Introduction Erich Leipold President, ESB Architect Certified Trainer, Sun-Certified Java Programmer 17 years of industry experience Focus on manufacturing, logistics, and retail Involved with large-scale team projects, as well as small projects Work with small businesses up to large corporations In-depth knowledge of pain and stress surrounding software application integration
The Reality of Software Expense Software Expectations Automate business process(es) Cut-down on expense Create efficiencies Cost Expectations One-time investment Near-immediate ROI Realistic Cost & ROI Substantial investment, with continuous maintenance costs Most savings are hidden ROI comes from expense savings, efficient business processes, and customer satisfaction
Why Doesn’t Software Work Nicely Together? Different software, different functions, different data Personal preference, stubbornness, and egos Best intentions to solve problems sometimes leads to others Everyone has their own opinion on the best solution Rapid development means rapid and many changes New technologies emerge over a short period of time, often forcing changes to software New technologies are perceived as good, but often cause headaches to end-users
Why Doesn’t Software Work Nicely Together? How can businesses cope with these problems? Make sure that over-the-counter software has the ability to import and export data in various formats, including XML and CSV. Make sure that consultants or contractors design custom software applications to be extensible. Add integration or middle-ware to allow software to exchange data. How will this help you deal with these problems? Software can be integrated with other applications and changed more easily and over a longer period of time. New technologies help extend the life of your applications and allow your current software to be more flexible.
Real-Life Software Headaches Your experiences . . .
Practical Solutions for Small Business Owners Over-the-Counter Software Be careful – this may cost you more than you expect. Internet or Web Applications Look for well-established OpenSource vendors that supply accounting, CRM, POS, and other solutions. Custom Software Development For niche applications, custom development may be a solution. Find an honest and reliable consulting company Independent consulting firms offer best-fit solutions. It’s difficult to keep up with technology. They can help integrate and extend your software.
Today’s Technology Made Simple? -- Get on the Bus! -- ESB – Enterprise Service Bus Provides flexibility for changing and integrating applications. Typically incorporates industry-standard data transports that are understood by most IT professionals, therefore bringing commonality to an otherwise complex landscape. Centralizes global functions, such as logging, security, and administration. Allows data to be routed to multiple destinations, reducing the number of point-to-point connections. Allows Enterprises to quickly respond to business changes with agility; leverage existing investments to address new business requirements or to extend current capabilities.
Proprietary Software vs. OpenSource Solutions Proprietary Software Many vendors only supply proprietary software, offering no ability to customize a solution. The cost is usually high and support is sometimes difficult to find. OpenSource Solutions Offers the ability to take their software and customize to fit your business requirements. It’s not always free, but sometimes less expensive. Customization is usually the biggest cost. The cost savings is usually in more efficient business processes.
What are the First Steps? Make a list of your current applications and what functions they perform. Create a list of problems that you have with your current software. Create a “Wish List” of items that you would like your current software to do. Find a consulting company that will help you make tech-based decisions, extend the life of your applications, and enhance your relationships with customers and vendors using technology.

Editor's Notes

  • #2: Agenda – adsfa Requirements – There are only three requirements, keep an open mind, ask questions when you want, leave if you feel bored. Timeframe – This presentation should last for approximately 40 minutes. After that we will have discussions on the practical uses for an ESB. evosolutions – Erich has been in IT for 16 years, most of that time as a developer. He has some ESB architecture experience and have been involved with several integration projects. Hi is a Sun-Certified Java Programmer, MuleSource Certified Business and Training Partner. Warren Hampton – Brings 13 years of IT development and management experience combining a diverse background of business management, network infrastructure, administration, web, XML and database design. For the last 6 years Warren has served as Enterprise Architect for two of the leading Mortgage companies in the US where he lead major ESB/SOA initiatives before joining a top ESB software vendor as VP and Sr. Integration Architect. About You – This is important to do early on so we understand what direction we need to go in when discussing topics. For a big audience, just ask how many titles are out there. For a small audience, ask for details about each individual.
