DOMS Digital Object Mangement Why, what, how,
Summary Why did we decide we needed to do this? How did we manage before? What will be different? What have others done? What remains to be done? How soon?
Why did we decide to do this? Getting more and more difficult to manage back end of digitisation process Directory structure for storing files File naming, particularly for multipage items such as sheet music, pamphlets, diaries, letters No guarantee of integrity of born digital material Ramp-up to industrial strength digitisation slv21 funding required MUCH more storage Improve access to collection materials and increase services for their creative use Present complex method of ordering high quality copies (& difficult for staff to know if we have high(tiff) or low(jpeg) as best quality, or need to re-image
How do we manage now? Files stored in series of directories named according to collection Within directories, files grouped according to function tiff (original), jpeg (public), thumbnail, display page Any change to display page, each instance needs to be individually regenerated, which is very time consuming Works ok for 1:1 bib:image, as becomes more complex, eg. Diary where pages need to be kept in order, file naming becomes very complicated Use 3 rd party proprietary (& no longer supported) software to provide data to PictureAustralia. Has to be run manually
油
/doc/ contains shtml page has to be regenerated each time change made This is the view jpeg There is no high res tiff for this, but not clear to either public or staff
油
What will be different The user interface will look different It will be possible to configure the UI using XSLT, so that given the same data, it can be made to look different without regenerating every page Public will be able to download high res images without placing an order, where they are available & clear of copyright We will be able to harvest EAD records for Primo, so that much more detailed information will be available than in catalogue records Will be able to set up multiple OAI harvest for PictureAustralia, OAIster, Google & other search engines much more easily than at present. We will have much more storage space.
Additional storage component
Will still see thumbnail in Voyager catalogue record, and that will link to new interface
Both TIFF & JPEG available Both TIFF & JPEG available

With the DOMS, it will be possible for staff to tell which parts present & correct, and it will also be clear to the public when there is a tiff available for download.

What remains to be done? Change the access conditions form of words in existing catalogue records for images Work on the design of the User Interface (UI), including which MARC fields to display & what to call them, and how to display link to high resolution image Test loads of multiple records from present location(s), under different conditions Schedule order of migration of metadata and digital files by directory Work through re-designed workflows for objects going directly into DOMS as part of digitisation programme Set up and test OAI harvesting for PictureAustralia etc
