Rhetta Patrick who helped write “Information Power” on left; she was national AASL president from ’89-’90 Mrs. Sue Shepherd (on right) at her retirement party in 1981 from Pulaski-Perry Regional Library; she was early AAVA member and AV pioneer trying to promote filmstrip and other AV use in public schools.
At first, the presidents had to serve until they could “find” someone to take their places. Membership in AAVA was $1.00 per year. At first, the conferences alternated between the colleges now called HSU and UCA. Once (1972) three members (Rankin, Lawrence, and Garrison) underwrote expenses for the whole conference which was in Russellville and a huge success! TRIVIA
Herb Lawrence was Treasurer from 1978 to 1993 and Pat McDonald took over serving from then till now ---AAIM won’t let you go! Pauline Rankin has been a member since 1967 and is now a professor at La. State University. She was president of AAVA when Ferrel James became a member when he was a student at UofA.
MORE TRIVIA Ferrel James got involved by designing an early journal cover and writing an article He went to conference and met Herb, Cecil Garrison, Heloise Griffon, and AG Kirby and knew Bumpass as a professor at UofA Ferrel thinks his involvement with AAVA helped him get his job at UCA where he was before UALR
1975 saw Dave Spillers come to UALR, Ferrel James to UCA, Dennis Fleniken to Tech, and Jim Shuff to HSU; Garrison was at UCA and Herb at AETN and Kirby at UAPB Heloise Griffon was in charge of the ADE AV Service film library John Cheek has been President twice—the only brave soul
Djuna Dudeck is John Cheek’s daughter so our President elect now will be the second generation AAIM President in her family. That is why we are emphasizing the history of AAIM and ‘The Next Generation’ in 2004 as she grew up with a lot of her dad’s peers who are active AAIM members.
1983 Conference John Cheek Djuna Dudeck 2004 Conference
AND . . . POLLY ORR OF BISMARCK and IRIS TUCKER OF BENTON HAVE ATTENDED EVERY CONFERENCE SINCE THEY STARTED HAVING THEM ABOUT 1972 Joyce Schneider, Betty Brown, Barbara Stripling, Mary Miller, Kay Bland, Suzy Gordon and others were members back in the 70’s
Ferrel was an AECT intern at their conference early on, and Rachel received the Region 7 AECT Mini grant and Fulton Awards AAIM won the AECT Region 7 Bumpass Award for Affiliate Excellence the last time Rachel was President and it is named after our Dr. Bumpass
Joyce McCain joined in 1975 and has been active ever since and is now Historian and keeps our archives; she even keeps printouts of our discussions on the AAIM Listserv!

I have been a member since 1988 and since then I have served as Membership Chair (for 10 years), Media Festival Chair twice, President once in ’95-’96 and next year again---and Board Member several times. I have written articles for almost all AAIM journals since 1989 and presented at all conferences since I joined. I even had time to scan the old archive photos and author this slide show.
