Philip Larmett has had an international career spanning the Netherlands, former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia. He has worked in advertising, media, marketing, translation, and English language teaching. Throughout his career, he has gained extensive experience in media planning, research, and training local staff. Most recently, he has worked as a lecturer in marketing and taught English classes in Kyiv, Ukraine, combining his media consultancy work with English teaching.

For a fewyearshe workedas an Exportrepresentative foraBritishshoe company,KShoes,basedinNorth-
WestEngland.His territorywasScandinavia,Germanyandthe Netherlands.Throughhiswork,he gaineda
rudimentaryknowledgeof the Scandinavianlanguages.

His nextstepwasworkingasa translatorfor the Dutch governmentinThe Hague.
His firstpositioninmedia&marketingwaswiththe largestDutchdailynewspaper,De Telegraaf,where he
firstacquired suchskillsasmediaplanning, research&consumertargeting.He workedonmediasurveys
¡°DecisionMakers84, 88 & 90¡± before movingto a new branch of Japanese adagency,Hakuhodo,asmedia
director.There he built&headeda teamof 8 staff coordinatingmediaactivityacrossthe whole of Europe
for multinational companies,suchasCanon,Nissin,Yakult.
In that period,Philipcompletedhisspecialistmarketingeducationwiththe NetherlandsInstitute of
Marketing(NIMA) andalsoreceivedadiplomain international advertisingfromthe IAA.
Eastern Europe
His advertisingcareerthentookhimtoEastern Europe;firstto Polandin1997 andthenon to Russiain
1998: 8 hecticbutveryproductive yearsinone of the world'sfastestgrowingnew markets, basedfirstin
Moscow and thenStPetersburg.¡°Inthat time,Ihelpedbuildasmall media operationintoone of the
marketleadersinRussia,OptimumMediaOMD,which became partof the Omnicomgroup.¡±Asthe market
and agency grew,Philiphelpedthe companyestablishbranchofficesinUkraine,AlmatyandStPetersburg
and trainedlocal staff inthe complexitiesof mediaplanningandbuying.
He switchedtoPrague early2007, to take up a regional managementpositionwithinOmnicomMedia
Group.
In November2007 he wentback East: to unpredictable Ukraine,workingforMediavest,partof Publicis
Groupe Media. The global crisis2008 affectedUkraine seriously: hiscontractwas prematurely ended.

ThroughouthisperiodinRussiaandUkraine, Philip
has beeninvolvedinin-companytraining:teaching

passingonhisexperiencetothe nextgeneration.He
alsocompletedthe Executive MBA course at the
StockholmSchool of EconomicsinSt Petersburg.
In Kyiv,he appearedasa guestspeakerfora
marketinginstitute,specialisingonthe advertising
process.
He alsotookon teachingassignmentsinEnglish(andDutch) forlocal language schools.
PhilipmovedtoAlmaty,Kazakhstanin2011, fora brief assignment,butcouldn'tsettleandreturnedto
Kyiv,whichhadbythenbecome hishome.
Back in Kyiv,from 2012, Philip hascontinued tocombine hismediaconsultancyandhisEnglishteaching
work. Of one of hisprojects,he said:
¡°At presentI'minvolvedinanewmediaconsultancyventure,withsupportfromaLondonspecialist media
auditagency,EMM International,andoffertheirservice onthe local Ukrainianmarket.¡±
More recently,in2013, he was invitedtobecome alecturerinmarketingatthe EdinburghBusinessSchool,
Kyivbranch,and has tutoredEnglishclassestothe Cambridge examinations(FCE,CAEadvancedlevel),and
businessEnglish(BEC) forGrade Education, aCambridge EnglishLanguage AssessmentAuthorisedCentrein
central Kyiv.
In late 2014, whenthe opportunityarose,he enrolledon,andsuccessfullycompleted,the CELTA course.
On receivinghiscertificate,he commented:
¡°Thisjust goesto prove thatit¡¯snevertoolate to learnsomethingnew.A lotof the methodologyand
conceptsjustdidn¡¯texistwhenIwasinacademiclife atthe otherendof mycareer. Language teachinghas
movedonwiththe times.AndI have anothercertificate tolaminate anddisplayonmywall!¡±
