- 2. Introduction The town of Cannevile, France, was in transition frombeing a Monarchy to a Republic. Dr. Massarel lead the republic movement and went to the Mayoralty with his subordinates to make the Mayor abdicate. The mayor quit without any resistance. The Dr. was overwhelmed that finally they were free, but no one apart fromhim seemed to be excited.
- 3. Thesis Statement • In spite of the circumstances people refuse to accept change even if they may benefit from it.
- 4. The character personalities • Dr. Massarel is a Republican who is really excited that the Monarchy had fallen in France after years of having an emperor. Dr massarel had expressions such as “The Republic has been proclaimed, the emperor has been taken prisoner, France is saved! Long live the Republic!” and “Hurrah! hurrah! Victory crowns the Republic everywhere.” He stayed overwhelmed until he noticed that nobody cared and his actions weren´t being rewarded not even with joy.
- 5. Second Element: Political Alussion • The author makes a critique of the political change in France during the XIX century without mentioning it directly, but actually showing it through the characters emotions and reactions.
- 6. Conclusion • As a conclusion Guy de Maupassant describes the political setting of France during the XIX through the eyes of a citizen that is in favor of change. Nevertheless the short story ends with a baffling turn of events.
