A Prayer for Peace in Syria and Across the World:
An Appeal on the Part of All Catholic Churches in the Diocese of Saint Petersburg
in Communion with His Holiness Pope Francis
Bishop Robert Lynch has asked that all churches in the five counties that make up the Diocese of
Saint Petersburg pray the following prayer at the end of all their Saturday evening Vigil Masses
(September 7, 2013). This prayer is in response to His Holiness, Pope Francis call for a day
of fasting and prayer for peace in Syria, the Middle East, and across the entire world.
Following the Prayer after Communion, the priest introduces the prayer:
Through the intercession of Mary, Queen of the Universe, the Light of Hope for
the world, we offer the following prayer asking that peaceful solutions will be used
to bring an end to the impasse for peace in the country of Syria, the Middle East,
and across the entire world.
After a moment of silence he continues:
Immaculate Heart of Mary,
help us to conquer the menace of evil,
which so easily takes root in the hearts of the people of today,
and whose immeasurable effects
already weigh down upon our modern world
and seem to block the paths toward the future.
And so we pray together: Hail Mary, full of grace
The short litany is introduced:
The response to the litany is: Deliver us.
From famine and war: R. Deliver us.
From nuclear war, from incalculable self-destruction, from every kind of
war: R. Deliver us.
From sins against human life from its very beginning: R. Deliver us.
From hatred and from the demeaning of the dignity of the children of God:
R. Deliver us.

From every kind of injustice in the life of society, both national and
international: R. Deliver us.
From readiness to trample on the commandments of God: R. Deliver us.
From attempts to stifle in human hearts the very truth of God:
R. Deliver us.
From the loss of awareness of good and evil: R. Deliver us.
From sins against the Holy Spirit: R. Deliver us.
And so we pray together: Hail Mary, full of grace
Accept, O Mother of Christ,
this cry laden with the sufferings of all individual human beings,
laden with the sufferings of whole societies.
Help us with the power of the Holy Spirit to conquer all sin:
individual sin and the sin of the world,
sin in all its manifestations.
Let there be revealed once more in the history of the world
the infinite saving power of the redemption:
the power of merciful love.
May it put a stop to evil.
May it transform consciences.
May your Immaculate Heart reveal for all the light of hope.
Amen.
