Warehouses are one of the most dangerous places to work because of sudden accidents caused by machinery. Such accidents can be prevented by stopping the machinery or alerting the operator immediately when it is in close proximity of a worker. Therefore, in this paper a gadget has been designed and a complete solution has been proposed for avoiding this problem to greater extent. The designed gadget consists of an ultra wide band (UWB) radio module for measuring distance between worker and machinery, a Cortex-M3 based STM32F105 micro-controller for ranging, and a long range AM radio module interfaced with Atmega328p for alerting fellow workers about the potential accident. In case of an emergency (e.g. a vehicle approaching), worker can pull an emergency string in the gadget that in turn will stop the machinery within a predefined range. A reliable, accurate ranging and alert mechanism has been successfully implemented which is based on well-known RF Time-of-Flight (TOF) method with 賊0.3m maximum error.
