Asbestos exposure continues to cause thousands of deaths annually in the EU. Mortality from past exposures is projected to increase through the late 2020s and 2030s. Strict regulations and enforcement are needed to identify asbestos in buildings and minimize exposures during renovation and demolition work. Recommendations include establishing a new lower exposure limit, mandatory asbestos surveys before renovation, and identifying and mapping all asbestos-containing structures. Proper training and certification of surveyors and removal contractors is also essential to protect workers and the public.
The Senate passed the Ban Asbestos in America Act to ban asbestos and invest in treatment and education about asbestos-related diseases like mesothelioma. Asbestos was widely used for insulation and fireproofing until the 1970s when it was discovered that inhaling asbestos fibers can cause cancer. While some uses were banned in the 1970s and 1980s, asbestos is still used in some building materials in the US that are imported from Canada and Mexico. The National Economic and Social Advisory Council in Thailand has also recommended banning asbestos imports and sales due to health risks of asbestos like cancer.

The plastic sector in Bangladesh consists of about 3000 manufacturing units, 98% of which are small and medium enterprises. The sector contributes 1% to Bangladesh's GDP and employs half a million workers. While Bangladesh imports all polymer raw materials, the country's cheap labor and developing plastic recycling industry provide competitiveness. The domestic plastic market is valued at Tk. 9,000 crore while direct plastic exports earn Tk. 500 crore annually. The sector ranks 6th in the country's export sectors and shows strong potential for further growth.
The document discusses the health risks associated with asbestos found in old house paints and building materials, which can lead to serious diseases like asbestosis and lung cancer. Despite being banned, asbestos remains a threat to those living in older homes, and the government provides guidelines for safe handling and removal. Homeowners are encouraged to test for asbestos and use modern, asbestos-free materials during renovations to prevent exposure.
The Canadian government's decision to reopen the Jeffrey Mine for asbestos mining has concerned environmental, labor, and health organizations. The World Health Organization classifies asbestos as carcinogenic as inhalation of asbestos dust can cause lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis, killing over 100,000 people annually. Its use is banned in over 50 countries due to health hazards. Mining conditions in Canada were also found to have minimal safety standards. While India has restricted asbestos, its Supreme Court refused a ban and instead directed governments to regulate its production and use, as the material remains common for low-cost construction despite health risks. Alternatives such as cellulose and agricultural fibers should be promoted over asbestos
The Single use Plastic Ban An Innovative Initiative for Environmental Protectionijtsrd

It details the specific items affected by the ban and highlights the challenges of implementing the Extended Producer Responsibility rules, which require manufacturers to manage plastic waste. Experts emphasize the need for effective waste management and viable alternatives to single-use plastics to ensure the initiative's success.

In many developing countries, government officials did
not have the assessment capabilities, regulatory regimes,
or infrastructure to effectively manage the risks posed by
the import and use of hazardous chemicals. This increased
the possibility the misuse or mishandling of hazardous
chemicals could harm human health and the environment.

Editor's Notes
#1: Hi, I am Surya Ferdian, From Lion Indonesia, an organization focuses on OSH since 2008.
I’m choosing this presentation title “Asbestos in developing country” because this dilemmatic situation we face in Ban Asbestos in Indonesia
#2: In Indonesia, we already use asbestos in the first era of our development since 1950.
Even though there was a story about our ancestor in Karawang who use asbestos as one of their clothing fabrics.
We don’t have any producible asbestos mining in Indonesia so that we import it from other countries.
Nowadays we have 27 Factories manufacturing asbestos in difference product. But most of it, 95 percent of asbestos manufactured become Asbestos Roof.
In fact, there is more than 9 million house hold (13,77%) still using asbestos roof for their house.
#3: Asbestos come to Indonesia mostly from Russia, China, Kazakhstan, and Brazil still export 4 thousand metric tonnes to Indonesia in 2022.
As you can see main port used to distribute asbestos all over Indonesia was Tanjung Perak (in east part) and Tj, Priok for West part.
This is related also with asbestos industry location in Indonesia.
#4: Basically Indonesia import on asbestos declining. But, the use of asbestos roof looks increasing in trend
#5: In this picture we can see that west and mid part of Indonesia household use the large source of Asbestoo
#6: This slides show us where the Industry located.
At the background of you can see the Population Density In Indonesia.
Asbestos industry located in high density population, produce the roof and others, and distribute them to other location.
#7: In other hand, Indonesia also import importing product containing asbestos material.
As you can see, Jointing, fabricated crocidolite, asbestos cement, from China, Japan, India, Korea as well as from Australia.
As same type with when we import Raw, material, that is not specified with HS code existing.
#8: This is the picture of our challenges.
Our government still not ban asbestos because Indonesia need labor absorption. Beside that trade agreement also need to be respected. Eg. Indonesia needs wheat, steel, fertilizer from Russia, and they also meet our Crude Palm oil. This also happened with Japan, and other.
In the developing country (third world), typically industry run as low cost and not based on research. Ban asbestos in this typical country means job lost.
Our Health Practitioner having less interest in asbestos related disease because we don’t have expert and its technology
In the side of labor in developing countries, wages is more important than health. Any technological/machinery changes means joblost
Our consumer here need cheap and durable for what its cost. We don’t have enough choices
#9: From the challenges I mentioned before, so that acceptable that we still struggle to have empirical evidence of the asbestos related disease victims.
#10: You can see this is advertisement in well-known online market place “Tokopedia” they sell asbestos material cheap and free.
#11: Talking about regulation in Indonesia concerning Asbestos
Our government and local government implement Non hazardous material
But our industries still get facilities to import asbestos (chrysotile) with 0% Duty
In the field of labour there are still “asbestos safety use” regulation
This is also happen with our regulation concerning dust threshold
In the field of health practicioner we have guideline regarding OSH But not specific in Asbestos (that still in working by Perdoki)
Last but not least, we have consumer protection law that make customer bureaucratically follow the rules to complaint
There is no regulation straightly mentioned Ban Asbestos
#12: From above situation and what we learned from our activity. It is clear that BAN Asbestos movement in Indonesia still need 3 dimension of work
Strenghten grassroots
Literacy to increase knowledge and skills
And The importance of policy advocacy
#13: For those movement, we need collaboration from all parts of society
#14: From our activity in 12 years .
From first 5 years our work focuses on finding empirical evidence
#15: We did also organizing grassroot and initiating Victim organization
#16: We make also many seminars along with university as well as labor and other parties.
#17: Slow but sure we also encourage media coverage.
#18: We also did many effort to make international solidarity
#19: In the field of health practice we proud achieved with our collaborative action with Perdoki
#20: From the first empirical evidence and get 1 compensation we grow to 6 evidence
#21: In 2020 there was 1 other publication concerning asbestos related disease happened to lecturer who use asbestos roof
#22: In 2022 there was 1 other publication concerning asbestos related disease happened to ex construction owner
#24: What we will do next in knowledge and resource center are this
#25: What we will do next in public policy are this
#26: We still improving our activity in grassroot and worker organizing
