Abstract expressionism emerged in the 1940s-1950s and was pioneered by artists such as Elaine de Kooning, Lee Krasner, Norman Lewis, and George Morrison. This style was responded to in later decades by other artists including Carole Schneemann, who incorporated Happenings performances; Robert Rauschenberg, who incorporated found objects; and Jasper Johns, who incorporated familiar imagery and symbols in his work.
