MAEM Masters Theses in Decade Past: A Content Analysis

ABSTRACT
One compulsory requirement in the completion of a masters degree is a masters thesis.
This study aimed to determine the trends in Master of Arts in Educational Management (MAEM)
presented to the faculty of Father Saturnino Urios University Graduate School within the last ten
years (2007-2016). Content analysis following the variables of Goktas et al (2012) was employed
in the study. The topics to which the studies revolved are also considered. Descriptive statistics
was used in the analysis of the data gathered. A total of 22 theses were analyzed. An average of
two theses is produced within one school year. Most of the researchers preferred students/pupils
as participants in the study which accounts to 36% while the least preferred groups are cluster 4
(parents), cluster 8 (principal, teacher, administrators and local board) and cluster 9 (principal,
teacher and students/pupils) which accounts to 5% respectively. These participants mostly come
from the public schools (64%) while only 36% derived from the private institutions. Most of the
studies utilized descriptive-correlation design with a percentage of 41. Researcher-made survey
questionnaire was the widely used data collection tool. Purposive sampling is the recurrent
sampling technique. Both quantitative and qualitative analysis predominated in the study. As to
the profile, most of the researchers are female ranging from 41-45 years old who are also employed
in public institutions. Data revealed that topics covered fall under (a) Instruction, (b) Educational
Management and (c) both Instruction and Educational Management. Topics on Instruction got the
highest percentage while topics covering both received the least. The result of this analysis is likely
to give a clue about the research trends in MAEM. Results are hoped to be of use in identifying
future research endeavors, bridging research gaps and even addressing the research needs of the
region.
