Acid rain is rain or precipitation that is acidic due to elevated levels of hydrogen ions caused by emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides reacting with water molecules in the atmosphere. It can harm plants, aquatic animals, and infrastructure through wet deposition. While some sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides occur naturally from lightning and volcanoes, governments have taken steps since the 1970s to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions from industry which has led to positive results.

plants, aquatic animals, and infrastructure through the process of wet deposition. Acid
