ADVERBS OF
FREQUENCY
Teacher: Ms. Liliana Lo Preiato
1
WHAT ARE ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY?
• We use adverbs of frequency to say how often we do something. Adverbs of
frequency are often used with the present simple because they indicate repeated
or routine activities.
2
Teacher: Ms. Liliana Lo Preiato

Teacher: Ms. Liliana Lo Preiato
OTHER EXPRESSIONS
• Here are some other expressions we can use to say how often. All of these longer
phrases go at the beginning or the end of the sentence but not in the middle.
once in a while:
E.g. I go to the cinema once in a while.
every now and again:
E.g. She drinks wine every now and again.
from time to time:
E.g. From time to time I visit my mother.
4
Teacher: Ms. Liliana Lo Preiato
OTHER EXPRESSIONS
• To say how often something happens, you can use a number or 'several' or 'many',
followed by 'times‘ (if the number is one, use 'once' instead of 'one time'.; if the
number is two use 'twice,' instead of 'two times') Then add 'a' and a period of time.
 I go to the cinema twice a week.
 She takes these tablets three times a day.
 I change the sheets once a fortnight (fortnight = two weeks).
 I meet him several times a year.
 I visit my parents once a month.
5
Teacher: Ms. Liliana Lo Preiato
OTHER EXPRESSIONS
• We can also use 'every' + period of time.
 every morning
 every day
 every Tuesday
 every week
 every month
• A day of the week with 's' at the end (for example 'on Tuesdays') means the same as
'every Tuesday‘.
• I take a dance class on Wednesdays.
• I relax on Saturdays.
6
Teacher: Ms. Liliana Lo Preiato
POSITION OF ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY
• AFTER THE VERB TO BE OR ANY VERBS WHICH DOESN’T TAKE AUXILIARES
 They are never early at school.
 He can never understand.
 I have always got a lot of homework
• BEFORE THE OTHER MAIN VERBS
 I always get up at 6.45.
 Mary often drinks beer.
 We usually play football on Sundays
7
Teacher: Ms. Liliana Lo Preiato
POSITION OF ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY
• In negative sentences the adverb of frequency goes between the auxiliary verb and the
main verb.
 He doesn’t often cry.
 I don’t often eat fast food.
 They don’t often go to the cinema.
• In question forms, the adverb goes before the main verb.
Do you often go to the cinema?
Did he sometimes leave the classroom?
Do they usually come late to class?
8
Teacher: Ms. Liliana Lo Preiato

  • 2. WHAT ARE ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY? • We use adverbs of frequency to say how often we do something. Adverbs of frequency are often used with the present simple because they indicate repeated or routine activities. 2 Teacher: Ms. Liliana Lo Preiato
  • 3. MOST COMMON ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY always usually often normally occasionally sometimes seldom never hardly ever constantly continually frequently infrequently intermittently periodically rarely regularly generally now and then almost never eventually quarterly weekly later once 3 Teacher: Ms. Liliana Lo Preiato

She drinks wine every now and again. from time to time: E.g. From time to time I visit my mother. 4 Teacher: Ms. Liliana Lo Preiato

  • 7. POSITION OF ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY • AFTER THE VERB TO BE OR ANY VERBS WHICH DOESN’T TAKE AUXILIARES  They are never early at school.  He can never understand.  I have always got a lot of homework • BEFORE THE OTHER MAIN VERBS  I always get up at 6.45.  Mary often drinks beer.  We usually play football on Sundays 7 Teacher: Ms. Liliana Lo Preiato
