The first leg runners for a relay race all start at the same time without looking at a map first. After finishing their leg, they hand off a token like a bib or wristband to the next runner on their team. A video shows footage from the 2017 World Orienteering Relay Championships depicting runners handing off a token in the exchange zone after completing their portion of the race.
