Three cases from different eras show how African American women have faced sexual assault without justice. In the 1800s, Celia, a slave, was convicted and hanged for killing her owner after he repeatedly raped her. In 2014, an Oklahoma City police officer was accused of sexually assaulting African American women in custody but faced no indictment. Also in the 21st century, other police officers in California and New York abused African American women with little accountability. These cases demonstrate how African American women have historically been vulnerable to sexual violence and denied justice or protection under the law.
