AFRICAN EGUSI GOURD AND SEEDS HOW
ITS USED, BENEFITS . CREATED BY AMV
• Cucumeropsis mannii is a species of melon native to tropical Africa west of the East
African Rift , where it is grown for food and as a source of oil.
• Its common names include egusi in Yoruba ‘‘‘Egwusi’’’ in Igbo and agushi in Hausa. In
English it is known as Mann's cucumeropsis and white-seed melon.
• Egusi seeds come from the Egusi gourd, which looks very similar to a watermelon. Unlike
a watermelon, however, the fruit from the Egusi gourd is bitter and not edible, so these
gourds are grown primarily for their seeds. These seeds are similar in size to small
pumpkin seeds and a bit creamier in flavor.
• They make up a really important component of many West African staples, including
Egusi soup, which is a West African classic. It’s widely enjoyed in countries like Nigeria,
Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Cameroon. Even though many of these countries and regions
have their own little variations for how they prepare Egusi soup, the importance of the
Egusi seeds remains the same.
BENEFITS OF EGUSI SEEDS

Melon contains anti-inflammatory properties that help treat infections and injury.
A study reveals that the methanol extract of egusi significantly inhibited serotonin, carrageenan and prostaglandin which
helps fight inflammation.
2. Help fights cancer
Egusi is a good herbal cure for cancer and is best for curing breast cancer.
3. Contains anti-arthritic properties
The study proved that melon fruit hydroalcoholic extract possesses significant anti-arthritic properties. This is attributed to
its rich constituent of phytochemicals such as flavonoids. As a result, it can be used for treating rheumatoid arthritis, which
is an autoimmune disease symptomized by chronic inflammation of the joints, stiffness, swelling, pain and redness in the
joints.
4. Dermatological purposes
The vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) and niacin in this plant help to maintain healthy skin. Oil extracted from egusi seeds can be used
for producing local soap and pomade for dermatological care.
5. Aids digestion and boosts appetite
Due to the presence of dietary fibre and vitamin B1 (Thiamine) in egusi melon, it is useful for digestion of food. and helps to
boost appetite due to its constituent of vitamin B1.
Egusi seeds are rich in vitamin A, which is crucial for forming and maintaining healthy bones. In addition, Egusi seeds
are high in vitamins B1 and B2, which are both important for growth and the production of red blood cells. There’s a high
concentration of vitamin C, too, which helps the body absorb iron and maintain healthy tissue. Finally, Egusi seeds are
also high in Niacin, which helps maintain healthy skin. Because of their high protein content, they can also serve as a
