African Literature
consists of a body of
work in different
languages and various
genres, ranging from oral
literature conducted in
different African
languages to written in
colonial languages
(French, Portuguese, and
English), (Cabardo, 2017).

after Asia, (Anacay, 2017).

AFRICA
HISTORY
The first African literature is circa 2300-2100, when ancient
Egyptians began using burial texts to accompany their dead.
Sub-Saharan Africa feature a vibrant and varied oral culture.
They provide useful knowledge, ethical wisdom, and creative
motivation in a direct fashion. Oral culture takes many forms:
proverbs and riddles, narratives, praise poetry, songs, legends
and folktales, (Punsalang, 2015). Essential to oral literature is a
concern for presentation and oratory. Folktale tellers use call-
response techniques. A praise singer will accompany a
narrative with music, (Motwani, 2011).

languages of Africa offers
an imaginative and
crucial connection to
unwritten indigenous
literature; this literature
illustrates the
adaptability of oral
tradition in that it
expresses its versatility
and diversity through the
