Alexandru Marghiloman was a Romanian conservative statesman who served briefly as Prime Minister of Romania in 1918 during World War I. He supported cooperation with Germany and neutrality for Romania at the start of the war. After Germany occupied Bucharest, Marghiloman remained there as president of the Romanian Red Cross and acted as a mediator between the German occupation authorities and Romanian population. He was also an enthusiastic horse breeder whose horses won the Romanian Derby 28 times.
