… we are an Alliance of Latino Student Organizations To collaborate with the administration in insuring the inclusiveness of Latino students, faculty, and staff in Vision 2013. To work towards the inclusiveness of Latinos at Northern Kentucky University: students, faculty, staff, and administrators. To ensure Latino academic and professional success. To survey Latino student recruitment and retention at NKU. To build an identity for the Latino student body.

Latino Student Organization Campus / Community Cultural Awareness Social Consciousness Explain LSO Agenda Share experiences Assist / Join existing Multicultural groups and events Student Members Peer Support/Insights Community Building Network Mentor/Guidance Volunteer Academic Support Our Mission: LSO shall coordinate cultural, social, and academic activities on campus in order to develop leadership skills among its existing members. LSO shall build a sense of community among Latino and non-Latino students at NKU. LSO shall increase awareness of issues facing Latinos, create a network of forward thinking people and promote change through cultural understanding and other progressive means of communication.

League of United Latin American Citizens Campus / Community Represent Latinos’ Interests Volunteer Social Service Assist / Join Existing Volunteer Groups and Events Student Members Provide a venue for students to represent Latino interests Our Mission: LULAC shall “advance the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, housing, health and civil rights of the Hispanic population of the United States.” LULAC shall aid the National LULAC group in attaining their goal by providing social service for the Greater Cincinnati Hispanic population. LULAC shall reinforce leadership qualities, responsibility and commitment in NKU student members of the chapter.

Educating Latinos for Kentucky’s Future Campus / Community Arouse interest on KY’s Education Legislature Advocate for an inclusive education system Assist / Join existing groups and events with common ground Student Members Scholarships Leadership Workshops Provide a path to change KY’s Education Legislature Our Mission: ELKF shall “inform Latinos about post-secondary educational opportunities, inform Kentucky's post-secondary educators and administrators about the importance of educating Latinos and strategies for doing so and do other activities devoted to the educational advancement of Latinos in Kentucky.” ELKF shall work with the National group in scheduling, planning, and coordinating the annual statewide conference. ELKF shall raise awareness and offer solutions to the administration and others on issues faced by current and potential Latino students at NKU.

Latino Student Orientation and Welcome Picnic Due to the lack of a transitional program for incoming Latino Freshman students , the Orientation is our greatest opportunity to reach out to them. We use this opportunity to inform students about resources, organizations, networking opportunities, and social service opportunities that current NKU students feel were/are valuable to their experience at NKU. Statistics have shown that participants of the Latino orientation are more likely to be involved with the office of Latino Student Affairs. As a result they would take greater advantage of what the Office has to offer, build a sense of community – resulting in an increased retention rate.

Virgen: Rosa, Caridad, Guadalupe Culturally, these three Virgins are the syncretized image of Virgin Mary and patrons of Peru, Cuba, and Mexico. For this reason we do not feel that this is promoting particular religious beliefs. However, because these three patrons are highly regarded in the Catholic Latin American Calendars, we have asked Father Mathew to include their celebration in his mass for that day. What these events are about is having a social service day like the one on Cesar Chavez day and Martin Luther King Jr. day, but we are creating a cultural bridge between Latin American social values and U.S. American social service idiosyncrasy.

NHHM Kick Off and Finale Humor is a great way to express frustration, conformity, reality, and many other feelings. We feel that Latino standup comic Joe Hernandez would give an interesting and entertaining perspective on what’s happening today, politically and socially, with the Latino community of the United States. To conclude current events, we have invited Hispanic journalist Fernando del Rincon, who is well known in the Hispanic community and can give us his insights on current issues faced by the Latino community. He has done many on-sight reports and has lead challenging newscasts involving Immigration issues, Arizona Law, DREAM Act, U.S. policies that affect Latino NKU students and the overall Latino community of the U.S. He is also an inspiration as a successful first generation immigrant journalist in the U.S.

NHHM PanAmerica Day “ What part of Mexico is Chile?” exactly! We feel that NKU students are not as familiar with the Western Hemisphere as they are with the Eastern. Although we are unclear on why this is, this PanAmerica Day event would showcase diverse South American cultures. We will have maps and flags of the 20 Latin American countries and hand out basic information about the diverse countries. Also, we will have on-sight activities such as arts and crafts that the students can create, immigrating Latin American typical art, as well as an interactive performance by a Brazilian Capoeira group, since many students don’t realize that Brazilians are also Latin Americans.

Mentor, Outreach, Presentations Together with Latino Orientation, another opportunity we have to help Latino students adjust to the college life is through our mentor program. In this program we would match successful Latino students with incoming Freshman so they can share experiences, resources, and relationship ties. Part of our duty is also to inform current high school students in the community of the great opportunities offered by NKU. As Latino Organizations we are committed to our community and even when students aren’t sure about attending our college, it is our duty to show them a path to post-secondary education. Several sociology, anthropology and Spanish professors have asked Latino members of our organizations us to give presentations in their classes about their life as immigrants as well as life in their native country. Public k-12 schools of the area have also asked us to coming to their classrooms and do a short presentations about the diverse Latin American cultures (non-Latino student also participate on these).

Multicultural Literacy Night A lot of students from diverse backgrounds are being taught in Kentucky and Ohio public schools. Although they may not be aware of it, they are being culturally excluded by their Language Arts or English teachers by not including authors from other heritage in their classes. During this event, we plan on selling books with international themes for a small price ($1-$5) so that those who cannot afford to buy these books for their children can have them for a small price. We are also hoping to have ACT/SAT books to sell for $5 to high school students that plan on attending college and cannot afford to pay for testing preparation courses. We will work with other organizations (YMCA, ELLF, Su Casa, Centro de Amistad), to identify students and teachers that would benefit from attending this event.

Cesar Chavez Day & MLK Day As part of our awareness agenda, we want to include the continuing struggle for the rights of U.S. citizens of Latin American heritage. One way we want to do this is to collaborate with other minority advocate organizations to show patterns between the struggle of African Americans and that of Latin Americans in the U.S. We will also use these days to promote social service and will collaborate with Kentucky and or Cincinnati social service groups in completing a task that will have social impact.

Community Outreach As part of our community outreach agenda, we will promote NKU and post-secondary education in the Latino community by assisting in multiple college fairs. We will also contribute voluntarily in the Latino community so that we can continue to stay in touch with their current needs and be able to identify them when we meet Latino students that are coming to NKU. Another way in which we are going to stay in touch with the community is volunteering at the Su Casa library and adult classes, and participating in the Santa Maria Health Fair and Children’s Day.

NKU In reach We will collaborate with the office of admissions in the second Multicultural Leadership Conference. By encouraging students to participate in diverse Leadership Conferences, we are building stronger leaders. We are bringing community leaders into our campus by hosting the YMCA Black and Hispanic Achievers Gala, as well as the English Language Learners Foundation 23 rd Annual Breakfast. We are also exposing high school students to NKU by inviting them to campus for Dia de los Muertos Celebration. We bring in members of the community through the Latin American Film Festival . We also make a good name of NKU by contributing to the Holiday spirit through the yearly Toy Drive, which is another way in which we promote the name of NKU in the Latino community.
