I sat down on a bench in the city just watching people go on by,
It was a sunny day and I was lonely that’s the only reason why,
Most walked with friends laughing, talking, having a great day,
They just walked past, like I wasn’t there, didn’t look my way.
As you get older, all on your own there are things that you miss,
Like someone saying good morning, a smile, maybe a little kiss,
Someone to share some thoughts or maybe just a little old moan,
But that don’t happen anymore, not now, not when you’re alone.
So in the mornings, when it’s time, I make myself a cup of tea,
I only make one, saves the washing up though, just one for me,
Sitting, looking out of my window, watching the world go by,
Gets me down a bit, get a lump in my throat, it makes me cry.
Sometimes I go to get the paper I might see someone I know,
I stop and have a chat but I can see that they can’t wait to go,
Still it’s not their fault these days people just don’t have time.
I’ve got plenty, it’s just a pity I can’t give them some of mine.
