The CT scan showed a dissection of the ascending aorta extending from the left subclavian artery down through the aortic arch, descending thoracic aorta, and abdominal aorta to the common iliac arteries. A multiphasic CT exam before and after contrast identified linear areas of low density within the aorta lumen consistent with a dissection originating in the ascending aorta.
