Anophthalmia is a rare condition where one or both eyes are either absent or not properly developed. It can occur in isolation with no other malformations in about 1 in 100,000 births. While two thirds of cases have a genetic cause, environmental factors like certain drugs, radiation, and toxins exposed during pregnancy can also result in anophthalmia. Genetic mutations and abnormal chromosomes are among the genetic causes of anophthalmia.
