The document provides details about Andrew Moore's background and interests in design and technology. Some key points:
- Andrew has been fascinated by technology from a young age and enjoyed taking things apart to see how they worked.
- He studied graphic design and mechanical systems/CAD design at university where he rediscovered his passion for design.
- His ambition is to design products that improve people's lives and push the boundaries of technology and design.
- He has experience in various areas including AutoCAD, product design, prototyping, and mechanical systems.
2. Design is a funny word. Some people think design means how it looks. But of course, if you dig deeper, Its really how it
works The late Steve Jobs said this and I could not agree more. Technology is forever developing and this fascinates
me. How the product looks is the final stage of design but how it works is the groundwork of design.
My interest in technology began at a very young age. I was fascinated with technology and keen to learn how
everyday items worked and how they were made. My parents bought me a Lego technic car kit when I was 10 and
I spent many hours building, dismantling, studying and rebuilding the kit to gain knowledge on how the mechanics worked
in this model. When an item at home broke I would often be found taking it apart to see what kind of mechanisms they
used in order to work and then try and figure out how I can fix it.
As I progressed through education my interest grew and I became more interested in the materials used and the
manufacturing processes used to create components. Through my studies I learnt the processes required to design
products from the initial design and research stage right through to the prototype stage. During projects my biggest interest
was researching materials and joining methods, often creating small prototypes and seeing how they work and how they
can be improved.
Upon finishing my National Diploma in graphic design my ambition was to obtain a position which would enable
me to utilize my qualification and develop my skills sets further. Although my search for a position wasn't as
successful as I had hoped I feel I have learned a great deal from the experience and it has given me new
respect for skills and qualifications. During my employment at a local conservatory roofing company I learnt
various skills from AutoCAD to the importance of understanding load values for different types and sizes
of roofs. I was also given the opportunity to spend time on the factory floor and help build a roof that I
had designed.
My time at Manchester Metropolitan University has allowed me to rediscover my passion for good
design and also expand my knowledge of mechanical systems and cad design. I enjoy taking on
tough challenges and have a passion for troubleshooting. I take inspiration from both the natural and
manmade world to create well conceived smart, simple, balanced solutions. When given a project to
complete I will explore as many different possibilities from the simple to the over complicated to ensure
I have explored all possibilities to produce the best possible product.
One of my passions is modern technology. I enjoy keeping up with new technology and materials
and seeing examples of how these have been used as well as future concepts.
My ambition for the future is to take on challenges that improve people's quality of life and to push
the boundaries of technology and design to produce modern designs that are both practical and
inspiring at the same time.

BRIEF: Investigate the outdoor leisure
industry extensively and identify
opportunities for new product
innovation or existing product
improvement. design an outdoor leisure product that
can be manufactured in plastic and is suitably
designed to meet the requirements of the rotational
moulding process.
for this project i chose to develop an outdoor seating
unit that provides locker storage and security for skiing
equipment in ski resorts. The seating unit needed to
be lightweight for easy movement and be suitable to
be used in outdoor wet conditions.

BRIEF: Unipart dorman are
expanding their current
head torch range to serve
various markets. Design a
unique and innovative head torch that would stand out
from existing head torches on the market.
Head torch
7. Design
The head torch includes a light sensor that will
automatically adjust the light strength when needed
but the user can override this and choose the
strength of the light themselves. 2 bulbs are used in
this design to provide both strong light and a wide
angle of light.
The head torch is powered by
a powerful rechargable lithium
iron battery in the rear
compartment to help balance
the weight. a rear red light is
included to provide illumination
and increase visibility.
The entire product has been
designed to be weatherproof
and achieves this through the
use of overlapping parts and a
rubber seal.

BRIEF: design a complex consumer product which
consists of numerous parts and serves a variety of
functions.
The emphasis of this project was on the
complexity of the cad model and its accurate
assembly.
For this project I chose to produce a pair of
headphones with multiple moving parts to allow
adjustment

the headphones have a simple yet profesional
design and can be produced in large numbers
with the use of injection moulding. parts have
been kept to a minimum to keep the cost per
unit down and assembly is simple to increase
production speed. soft cushions have been
used to make the headphones comfortable for
the user and can be removed for cleaning if
needed. The headphones can be adjusted

10. Eco - dome
BRIEF: Identify a new or less common sustainable material that
can be used by a designer to achieve a positive
environmental impact. Design an appropriate product that will
show off the visual and structural qualities of the selected
material. The product should be suitable for mass or batch
production and will be a give away to potential clients in an
upcoming sustainable materials exposition.
For this project I chose to use PLA (Polylactic Acid as it is a
biodegradable thermoplastic derived from natural lactic acid
from corn starch, Tapioca roots or sugarcane and can
dissolve in soil in 30 - 45 days. This material can be used in
the same way as other common plastics and is suitable for
injection moulding.

11. Design
The eco dome is designed to be used
in various locations from home to office.
The dome has a large opening to allow
the user to water the plant inside and
also allows the plant to grow out of the
dome. The inner dome is thicker to
allow the plastic to degrade without
leaking any soil.

Once the plant inside the eco dome has
outgrown the dome the user can plant the
entire product outside in their garden. The
remaining plastic will degrade allowing the
plant to continue growing.

BRIEF: Design and construct a complete CAD
model of a multipurpose shopping trolley.
Research has shown that one of the
disadvantages of local high street shopping is
the lack of a trolley that can be used in all
shops for multiple purchases. The trolley should
be capable of carrying young children in a
similar manner to a supermarket trolley and must
be able to be attached to a bicycle for
transport.

BRIEF: Identify a suitable product application that would
utilise all the features that lie within Arduino boards.
realise the concepts potential by producing a fully
developed and detailed product that is ready to be
launched at the innovative technology fair in Tokyo.
This was a group project and we chose to design and
develop a unique music system that could follow the
user around the house through the use of multiple
stations and sensors.

BRIEF: A manufacturer of outdoor equipment wishes to
investigate the possibility of a MICROGENERATOR: a small
electricity generating device that will provide sufficient electrical
current to charge small portable devices such as
phones/cameras/torches. The requirement is that the product
can be worn by a hiker in the wilderness and the action of
walking powers the microgenerator. Obviously, the device will
have to be as light and unobtrusive as possible; ideally the hiker
will hardly be able to tell that he/she is wearing and driving it.
for this project i chose to use electromagnetic induction as the
method of producing energy and create a small device that
could be placed anywhere the user wishes. the energy
produced would then be stored in a battery and allow the user
to charge a number of devices as and when they wish via a
usb connector.

BRIEF: Design a motorized vehicle that can be used in a
holiday village to encourage holidaymakers to explore the
site without using their cars. The vehicle will be aimed at the
elderly, disabled or unfit holidaymakers who would normally
be discouraged or unable to use mountain bikes to explore
the area and would need to resort to using their own
vehicles.
The management of the holiday village have requested that
the vehicle must be capable of a minimum range of 20-30
miles before it needs re-fuelling or re-charging and cannot
exceed speeds greater than 15mph.

BRIEF: From recent research it has been discovered that a
large number of patients in hospitals worldwide are not
active enough during their time in hospital and are
spending too much time either laying in bed or sitting
down. This has a direct affect to patient health as
prolonged times spent in bed can cause painful bedsores
and depression and studies have shown that active
patients can speed up the recovery period. Many
patients suffer from various types of pain while in hospital
and this can be increased with movement. This project
will therefore, design a mobility aid to assist patients either
getting out of bed or to assist patients when moving
around the hospital.
