This document discusses the spiritual concept of love from various perspectives. It describes love as an ingredient in the cosmic creation of the universe, as the primal force sustaining nature, and as the glue that binds together families, communities and society. It then contrasts human love with divine love and outlines the four stages of progressing from human to divine love: from self-interest to interest in others, from knowledge to equality of feeling, from ego to selflessness, and from duty to unity with the divine.

4. Love: scientific and social views
Love rules the court, the camp, the grove,
And men below, and saints above:
For love is heaven, and heaven is love.
Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832)
Neither a lofty degree of intelligence
nor imagination, nor both together go
to the making of genius. Love, love,
love, that is the soul of genius.”
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
(1756-1791)
7. What is Love?
Ø Let us answer the question of “What is Love?” from three
different perspectives, seeing it from the spiritual, the
mental, and the practical aspects of human experience
Ø Love as an ingredient in creating the cosmos
Ø Love as the primal force sustaining Nature or Prakrithi
Ø Love as the glue in family, community and society
Ø Yet, be consciously aware that all these are simply the
different aspects of one entity, Love. Just as a statue
photographed from different angles remains one – so a
description of the different aspects of Love will not alter
what it is
9. Love is an ingredient in cosmic creation
Before the universe comes into creation, nothing exists – there
is no Time or Space, no galaxies, no light, no sound, no matter
exists – not even the “dense matter” that could be Lemaître’s
“primeval atom”. Spiritual traditions discern an Absolute Reality,
a Divine and Blissful Awareness, which remains absorbed in
itself as Pure Being. To know itself, this awareness creates an
energy that starts expanding in all directions, according to the
inherent kinetic or propulsive nature of energy. But the innate
nature of this Pure Being is Love, which attracts, which brings
close to itself, which abhors any separation (or centrifugal
forces). Between this expansion and contraction, between
Energy and Love (both from Pure Being), there occurs a
vibration, which becomes the source of all of creation!
10. Love as an ingredient in cosmic creation
◆ “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with
God, and the Word was God.” – St. John I: 1-3
◆ "These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness,
the beginning of the creation of God;" – Revelation 3:14
◆ “…the Sound principle AUM becomes manifest as prakrithi
or Nature” – Hatha Yoga Pradipaka
◆ “Grow not skeptical, but attune thyself to the sound coming
down from the Heavens. ….were I to speak of these sweet
melodies, even the dead shall rise up.” – Maulana Rumi
◆ “The all-pervading Word has attracted my entire mind. What
else have I to think of? Communion of the soul with the
Word creates everlasting Bliss.” – Guru Nanak
12. Love is the primal force in Nature
Ø Einstein’s dilemma: how does the nucleus remain stable?
Ø Love expands – and so does Nature, overcoming all obstacles
through the power of love
Ø Love is selfless – and so Nature provides her bounty for all beings
Ø Love is forgiving – human beings may exploit Nature for their
personal benefits, but all the damage perpetrated by selfishness
can be repaired quickly if we treat Nature with love and respect…
Love lives by giving and forgiving,
self lives by getting and forgetting…
Sri Sathya Sai Baba
13. Love is the glue in family, community, & society
Love as thought is Truth,
Love as action is Right Conduct,
Love as feeling is Peace,
Love as understanding is Non-Violence.
Sri Sathya Sai Baba
14. Love is the glue in family, community, & society
15. What is Divine Love?
Duty without love is deplorable,
Duty with love is desirable,
Love without duty is Divine.
Sri Sathya Sai Baba
