Eastern white pine  Pinus strobus
A large conifer with very soft needles, native to the
eastern U.S. Does best on protected sites and not
recommended for windbreak plantings. In the Red River
Valley, may perform well when young, but becomes
chlorotic after 20-30 years.
Mature height: 65-85
Fall color: Green
A medium-sized tree that is known
for its large clusters of white
flowers in the spring and large fruit
clusters that last well into winter.
Susceptible to sunscald when
young, and also susceptible to
fireblight.
Mature height:
25-35

European mountain-ash

Black walnut  Juglans nigra
A large oval to rounded, somewhat open-crowned tree.
Generally needs a protected site and some seed sources
subject to winter dieback. Does best in moist, well-drained
soils.

A large tree native to the eastern
U.S. Does well on moist but well-
drained soils. Northern Flare速

Sisseton  is an NDSU release
with orange-red fall color. The
general species may have
dieback after 25-30 years.

Hackberry  Celtis occidentalis
A medium-sized tree native to
North Dakota. A good replacement
tree for American elm because of
its similar form and adaptability.
Gray, unique stucco-like bark. A
leaf gall is common in summer,
though it is harmless.
Mature height:
40-60
Fall color:
Yellow
A large shade tree with
rounded, symmetrical crown.
Does best on moist, cool soils.
The cultivar Deborah has
deep red foliage in the spring
that changes to dark green.
Susceptible to sunscald when
young and to Eutypella canker.
Mature height: 40-50
Fall color: Yellow
