- 2. Guerrilla (2011) By Nasiruddin Yousuf Introduction: Guerrilla is a Bangladeshi Bengali film directed by Nasiruddin Yousuf. This film has got the Bangladesh national award in 2011. The film is based on the Bangladesh liberation war. Art direction and set design of the film: The film is based on the Bangladesh liberation war. So time is very important in this film. As the history is in 1971, art director shows very important role in making set design. In this film income source is an important issue we have noticed it before like other film. So set design, the costume design, makeup, properties are done according to the income source. Thus income source or financial state is very important. As the Bangladesh liberation war is not about one family, there are some families or many characters are taken in this film. So use of sets, use of costume, use of makeup and use of properties have been increased in the film. Sets are made based on three main issues. 1. Place 2.Time 3. Characters are the three main issues. In the film place has been indicated in the then city of Dhaka. Time is 1971. So the sets are made of according to the time. In 1971 how did the houses look? Thus according to the time the sets are constructed. Bricks walls are used as the sets of the film. The roof is made of thermocol, boards and other things. The walls are also constructed with woods, thermocols and boards. Chairs and the bridge are constructed with the instruments. Properties, costume and makeup: In the film ‘Guerrilla’ properties, costume and makeup are also used precisely and aesthetically. The costume of the military and the freedom fighters are different. The main character ‘Bilkis’, her costume and the other unimportant character’s costume is different from the other. Makeup is also important. When Bilkis went to the military hotel taking bomb, her makeup was very important. That indicated her difference. She is important one. The properties are also very important. But the properties which are of 1971 aren’t used in the film. But use of properties is admirable.
- 3. The evaluation from the perspective of art direction and set design: Source of income is the main factor. Everything of the film is based on the source of income. Besides, the art director of the film has made the sets thinking the three main issues. The issues are 1.Artistic sector of the set 2.Technological sector. 3. Financial sector. The art director has done the sets according to the financial sector. So it is very important. Besides, use of costume and makeup are very important. The car of the military is of then East Pakistan. But one car has been beautified with the leaves. In whole film, use of art direction was very accurate and precise. So it is also admirable. Uttarer Sur (2012) By Shahnewaz Kakoli Introduction: ‘Uttarer Sur’ is a Bangladeshi Bengali film written and directed by Shanewaz Kakoli. It has got the Bangladesh national film award in 2012. Art direction and set design of the film: The art direction of the film can be shown describing its aesthetics, set, place, time, characteristics and source of income at last makeup, costume design, properties. The film is captured in village. Three main characters Chan Mia, Ambia and Aeysha . In the film we noticed that an old village house is located in the area of open space near the river. The main problems of them are poverty, lack of education, unconsciousness and many more. This indicates us the reality of our village’s situation and culture. A poor family indicates the whole villages of the country. The set design of the film depends on the source of income. So the main factor is source of income. It can inform the whole situation of the family. It can indicate the situation of the
- 4. family that the situation of the family is good or bad economically and socially. In the film ‘Uttarer Sur’, the familial situation of Chan Mia is very poor. He sings Vawaiya song with his daughter. Sometimes, people give them money for song. But sometimes, they don’t give money. So the income source of Chan Mia is very poor. There are two rooms constructed with bamboo and woods. But the roof is tin shed. There are some types of set used in the film, especially in the house. The fence is used around the house. It is also constructed with bamboos. Properties, Costume and Makeup: There are many properties used in the film. Tubewell, pots and pans, plate of soil, glass oven, spade. Lamp, Instruments of Vawaiya song, setar and many more are used in the film. As costume, Lungi, Shari, Punjabi,vesture and many more costumes are used . The evaluation from the perspective of art direction and set design: In the film, we noticed that the income source of the character ‘Chan Mia’ is singing song. But poverty is his constant fellow. Art director looks after all the sector of pre-production. So the achievement of pre-production should be very amaging and aesthetic. Art director also has used same formula. For this the art direction of the film is very aesthetic. Besides, the properties, costumes and makeup are also very important issue. Chan Mia and Ambia have used makeup. This has expressed the characters nicely and aesthetically. One important point is set design. The set used in the film is playing an important role. In a house there are two rooms. The house is constructed with bamboos and woods. But Chan Mia hasn’t made this. He has got it from his grand-father. So art director, costume designer play an important role for making film. The costumes were very old. So costume designer has tried to understand the audiences the reality. In a word, all the sectors of it were very important and aesthetic.
- 5. Mrittika Maya (2013) By Gazi Rakayet Introduction: Mrittika maya is a Bangladeshi Bengali film directed by Gazi Rakayet. It has got the Bangladesh national award in 2013. Art direction and set design of the film: In art and set drsign of the film, there are some houses of Khirmohon, the character of the film. Besides, the banyan tree is also made artificially. The stems of the tree are beautified with the leaves. The houses are constructed depending on the source of income. The income source of the character Khirmohon and Boishakh is pottery. Their financial situation is low-middle class. So the houses are also constructed according to the financial state. Income source is very important in making film. Through income source, everything of the family would be known, specially, the costumes, makeup, behavior and everything. The properties of the family are also important issue. The family uses properties indicate the financial state. So it is also an important issue. Time, place and characters are the main issue for an art director to beautify and make the set. There are some common types of sets that are used in the film. The place where the ‘Mrittika Maya’ is captured is village. This village indicates the whole village of the country. Art director makes the set according to the ‘time’ of the film. The time in this film is used is modern time. A potter family of modern time lives in the village. So the house is constructed according to the time. Characters are also important issue for this. For example, for dialogue and the attraction of the audiences characters are must. So according to the time and place the costume of the characters and make are used aesthetically. In ‘Mrittika Maya’ the above points are used for aesthetics.
- 6. Properties, costume and makeup: In the film ‘Mrittika Maya’, there many kinds of properties are used to express it logically. A wheel, sculptures, pots and pans, stick, and many other things are used in the film. Besides, the costume design is very important. We noticed that in the film the characters Khiromon, Boishakh and Poddo and other characters are given some bright color costume to understand them important characters. The evaluation from the perspective of Art direction and Set design: In the ‘Mrittika Maya’, the work of art direction and set design are done accurately by the art director. Besides, use of properties, use of costume design and use of makeup are done precisely and accurately. Specially, an art director always thinks three kinds of sector for film making 1.artistic sector of set 2.technological sector 3.financial sector. In artistic sector all kinds of art direction and set design, properties, costume, makeup and some other things are involved. But art director also works according to technological sector. In financial sector he makes set according to the source of income. So the sets of the film are related to the income source completely. For example, the houses of the film are constructed with bamboos, woods, thermocol and boards. The banyan tree is also constructed with them. In a word, art director has tied to understand set design and art really using artificial thing. These are very important. Thus the achievement has become successful.
