John Yau discusses John Ashbery's career as an art critic and how his poetry reflects his interest in visual art. Ashbery's poetry captures the spirit of abstract expressionism through its nonlinear structure and focus on perception rather than narrative. His experimental approach to form influenced subsequent generations of poets to push the boundaries of what poetry could be.
