Hugh Dubberly argues that convergence has evolved from Convergence 1.0, which integrated publishing, broadcasting, and computing, to Convergence 2.0, which integrates physical, social, and service aspects. Convergence 2.0 sees the integration of interactive multimedia with internet-based services and social networks. It also involves providing information about physical objects and contexts through networked sensors and metadata. When designing for Convergence 2.0, one must consider how to make content social, interactive, integrated with services, and connected to both digital and physical worlds.

In the 18th Century the government instigated a ban on the import on furniture thus igniting one of the greatest cultural contributions to the history of furniture making. As a result of the ban - national furniture making took off creating Masterpieces that would change the history of antiques.
In 1846 the guild system dissolved in Sweden and the carpenter's strict quality controls ceased. Cabinetmakers were now able to freely practice their craft. During the second half of the 19th century it became more common with machine-made parts and the handmade furniture decreased most significantly and unfortunately so did the quality.
Much of the Swedish furniture currently available on the "antique" market has been comprehensively rebuilt and restored, often repainted in popular pale colors and sadly some of these created or "style" pieces are sold as period. It is paramount to pay attention and look closely. ?During the 80’s and 90’s a lot of furniture with original color was unfortunately destroyed by chemicals.
In conclusion: Pieces that look Gustavian but were made one or two hundred years later or even last year are properly designated in the Gustavian style.

Art Nouveau furniture featured elaborate curves and twists inspired by nature that had to be done by hand, making it expensive. Art Nouveau furniture featured elaborate curves and twists inspired by nature that had to be done by hand, making it expensive. While short-lived, it proved influential on later styles like Art Deco and Modernism.
Art Nouveau furniture emerged in Europe between 1890-1910 and was characterized by intricate designs incorporating flowing, organic curves inspired by nature. Key designers included Belgian artist Henry van de Velde, Frenchmen Emile Gallé and Louis Majorelle from the School of Nancy, and Charles Rennie Mackintosh from Scotland. Materials often featured included wood, glass, metal and ceramics. Art Nouveau emphasized craftsmanship and natural forms over historical styles, influencing design, architecture and applied arts.
This writing table from 1784 was commissioned for Marie Antoinette and features an intricate inlaid wood design. It was crafted by Jean-Henri Riesener in the neoclassical style inspired by recent archaeological discoveries at Pompeii and Herculaneum. The table has since passed through several owners and collections, and is now housed at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., where it offers insight into the refined furniture craft of 18th century France.
In the early 18th century , countries vied with each other to expand their empires and the aristrocracy emphasized its position with lavish displays of wealth and luxury.
ROCOCO STYLE:-
Pieces of furniture were smaller, lighter, and more curvaceous in form than earlier styles, often with curved cabriole legs and pad or claw and ball feet.
Free standing tables no longer had cross strechers and pedestal legs were replaced by cabriole legs with a double s- curve.

Art Nouveau was an art movement that originated in Europe in the late 19th century, characterized by organic and flowing forms inspired by nature. It emphasized asymmetric designs, natural materials, and rejection of historical styles in favor of new organic forms. The 1900 Paris Exposition displayed the Art Nouveau style through architecture like the Grand Palais and Petit Palais, as well as furniture, glasswork, and other decorative arts. Key characteristics of Art Nouveau included flowing organic motifs like stems and flowers, asymmetry, emphasis on handcrafting over machines, and use of materials like iron, steel and glass.
This settee and chair were designed by ?douard Colonna in 1899 for the Art Nouveau wing at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle. Made of maple wood with whiplash carvings, the pieces featured elongated, sinuous lines inspired by nature. They were part of a complete salon designed by Colonna for Siegfried Bing's Maison de l'Art Nouveau, known for its contributions to the Art Nouveau style through furniture, textiles, and interior designs. The set later became part of the Virginia Museum of Modern Art's collection.

The document provides information on various historical furniture styles including Shaker, Hepplewhite, Sheraton, Chippendale, Adam, Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and Mid-Century Modern. It describes the key designers, materials, and design elements associated with each style. The Shaker style was simple and functional, inspired by the religious Shaker community. Hepplewhite, Sheraton, and Chippendale styles featured elegant designs published in books that were widely influential. The Adam style used neoclassical motifs inspired by antiquity. Arts and Crafts promoted handcrafted furniture and natural materials. Art Nouveau featured flowing organic forms while Art Deco used geometric shapes and new materials like
Art Deco took its name from an exhibition in Paris in 1925 that featured decorative arts and modern design. It drew inspiration from reactions against flowing Art Nouveau designs as well as an Egyptian exhibition in Paris in 1922. After World War I, architects and designers wanted a modern, functional style for furniture, jewelry, and decorations. Art Deco designs were geometric with clean, simple lines. Designers used unusual materials like ebony, steel, and sharkskin for decorative effect, making the styles affordable only to the wealthy. French designers like Ruhlman created elegantly proportioned furniture while British designers like Heal & Son emphasized functionality using more familiar woods.
The Empire style originated in France in the late 18th century and spread throughout Europe, featuring mahogany furniture with classical shapes and ornamentation. In the 19th century, there was a revival of various historical styles including Gothic, Rococo, and Renaissance alongside new styles like Biedermeier that featured simpler classical designs. Furniture production became more standardized and industrialized during this time through the use of machine manufacturing, while designers continued to draw inspiration from diverse sources and movements.
The document discusses Gothic period furniture from the 12th-16th centuries. Gothic furniture was ornate and used design elements from Gothic architecture like pointed arches, flying buttresses, quatrefoil and trefoil shapes. It was characterized by ornate carvings, use of turrets and gargoyles as decorative elements, and the incorporation of quatrefoil and rosette designs. Specific furniture mentioned includes a key cabinet from 1876 attributed to the designers Kimbel and Cabus, known for Gothic Revival furniture.
This document summarizes the renovation of a 1970s modernist villa in Arles, France by a Belgian couple. The villa was an avant-garde architectural icon designed with freedom of expression. While preserving the soul and character of the original building, the new owners collaborated with designers to bring the home up to date with modern materials and colors. Nature and light are emphasized throughout the renovated spaces, which feature the couple's extensive art collection and blend contemporary and vintage furnishings.

Eight piece Henry II style dining set in walnut, c1890.
These gothic dining chairs are walnut and were made in the
1890s.This style with the art nouveau embossed leather
and ornate carvings are usually found near Paris and the
Lyon region. There is damage to the backs of some of the
chairs and we suggest putting a new piece of leather on the
back of each chair.

19th century English Butler's Tray . Used by servants to
deliver food and drinks to the hosts of the home and their
guests although it was never seen by guests as it was only
carried to the door from where the items were hand-
carried in to the room. These make wonderful tables for all
occasions today and can be folded away easily.
The webbed straps hold the Butler's Tray in place and easily
fold closed so that the tray and the legs can be lent against
a wall, in a cupboard or even kept under a bed. They are
highly desirable.
