A Six Sigma project was launched at 3M Brazil in 2002 to reduce losses in the production of electrical tapes. The project used the DMAIC methodology over five phases: Define identified problems and objectives; Measure identified 239 variables and selected 58 critical ones using cause-effect matrices and process maps; Analyze further studied the 58 variables and identified 8 then 3 key ones using Multi Vari and FMEA tools; Improve developed experiments on the 8 variables to improve them; Control developed a process monitoring system. The project achieved its 17.9% loss reduction goal and exceeded its 30% unit price reduction target, gaining 31%.

2. Assignment #3 ¨C Company 3m - Brazil
? In order to reduce the percentage of losses in a family of electrical tape, the Green
Belt person of the area developed a Six Sigma project for this requirement.
? The project was launched in September 2002 with a term of completion in March
2003. The main objective was to reduce the losses of electrical tapes, always seeking
to improve the quality and consistency of the product.
? The goals imposed were a reduction of 17.9% loss and a gain with the reduction to
30% in unit value.
? The project used the DMAIC (Definir, Measure, Analyse, Improve and Control)
methodology as the basis of its development, which divides the project into five
phases.

? The first phase, Define, have been identified the problems and the objectives of the
project.
? The second phase, Measure, was to measure the process performance identifying
239 input variables. Through statistical tools were selected 58 critical variables of the
process. The statistical tools used were matrices cause and effect and process maps.
? The third phase, Analyze, were studied 58 critical process variables through the Multi
Vari tool which were selected only 14 critical variables. At this stage was also made a
new selection of the critical variables using the FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects
Analysis), which identified eight critical variables. Among these eight (8) were
highlighted three key variables.

? In the fourth phase, Improve, experiments projects were developed in the eight critical
variables, which helped in improving them.
? And in the fifth phase, Control, it was developed a monitoring system for the process
applied. According to the Green Belt responsible for designing the loss reduction, the
goal of 17.9% was achieved and that the reduction in the unit price was higher than
planned, reaching 31% of gain.
