Athens created the first democratic government where male citizens directly participated in governing by speaking in the Assembly and voting. Only adult male Athenian citizens could participate, excluding women, immigrants, and slaves. The main governing bodies were the Assembly of 500 citizens, the Council of 500 that set the Assembly's agenda, and the People's Court of citizen juries. In contrast, the United States has a representative democracy where citizens over 18 can vote and those over 35 can be elected President, with governance divided into the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. Both had democratic elements but Athens was more directly democratic while the US is a republic.
