How did you attract/address our audience?
In order to address our audience successfully we have to follow the common conventions of the film genre: Rom-Com.The plot of a Rom-Com will see an obvious couple taken through a series of obstacles and misadventures designed to keep them apart until the end. In many romantic comedies, the potential couple are polar opposites from different temperaments, situations, social statuses, or all three.
We showed this in our opening sequence by our main character, Simon, who follows the generic conventions of a geek: a sci-fi and computer expert who is perceived of being overly- intellectual. This can be seen via iconography within the opening frames when the camera pans across Simons bedside cabinet and a scientific figurine is seen, a book open with glasses on top, plus many other weird objects. This helps to set the tone of the film whilst also allows the audience to have a deeper understanding to the main character.American Pie
The sound effect of an alarm clock is heard to create a sense of realism. This automatically grabs the audiences attention. The music used whilst Simon is getting ready for college is AC/DC Rock and Roll Singer. Our target audience is Teenagers who are influenced by music, sound and visual content. This music is used to enhance the theme and tone of the film whilst also helping to express the emotions of the characters. In this case Simon is being shown in an oxymoronic way, as the music signifies him as wanting to be a rock and roll star; all cool suave and sophisticated. However as we see visually, he is far from this as he trips and falls his way to college creating humour within the opening of the film in order for us to appeal to our target audience. Voiceovers are used as well to allow Simon to talk directly to the audience which immediately engages them.
This music is then followed by a sound effect of a record scratching as Simon is rugby tackled to the floor by his side-kick friend Liam. This helps to develop humour within the movie again appealing to the target demographic. This scene I think it would appeal the most to our audience due to the fact that firstly its humorous, its realistic and relatable because our target demographic will have gone through a similar situation like this sometime in their life so they can draw a connection with the film. As well the dialogue is realistic for the area and social class of the characters. The characters talk like teenagers therefore the audience can relate to them easily.
The film is similar to movie such as Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging however in reverse with the boy being the geek and the girl being the sex god in this case. Others include 10 Things I Hate About You and CLueLess as it also set in a high school/ college setting and also our film follows the Rom-Com clich辿s of this genre.
The music in the classroom scene is Marvin Gays Lets get it on song. Again this music allows our film to follow the common conventions of a Rom-Com as it successfully allows us to carry out the humorous comedic side of the film whilst allowing the main character to express the romance he has for Amy Tyler; The most popular girl in college which the audience can easily see without any complication.
The certificate our film would get a 12A as adulterated language is used and mild violence.
