Pluralism in Malaysia developed over time through interactions between various ethnic and religious groups. During the Malacca Sultanate, trade brought different peoples like Indians and Chinese who influenced the region's politics, economy, and society. Under colonial rule by the Portuguese, Dutch, and British, immigration of new groups expanded pluralism. The British further divided and ruled the various ethnicities, implementing policies that established a pluralistic Malaysian society through separating administration of different groups.
