Editor's Notes

  • #2: Good morning and thank you. Great to be amongst friends. My goal is to give you a tour of some of the exciting opportunities that are opening up in the biz world and to give you the confidence to ask further questions at the end. As with most things in Biz and life, I rarely hear I wish we had waited to have this conversation, and a conversation works best when its a 2-way exchange of info. Sounds good? Lets make a start
  • #3: Here is the workplace my generation came into. Top L, the dream of the corner office. Top R & Bottom left - the reality. Compartmentalized functions. Not sure that we were prepared, but its where we learned to sink or swim. Your generation are entering the bottom right difference ? Open, transparent, egalitarian.
  • #4: This is the current reality collaborative meeting space global virtual teams telepresence from Cisco Pictured below anybody recognize it? You pay $100K+ for the pleasure of a Bloomberg terminal. Why? Real-time info = competitive advantage
  • #5: This is just to reassure you you are not late to the party just yet! This is 75% of the working world. By comparison, in retail world latest holiday figures 47% shopped in malls; 47% online. So you arent late but this train is departing.
  • #6: This top schematic shows where we are in numbers. Big numbers Billion with a B. What is actually indicates is the impact of something called B.Y.O.D. - bring your own device! That has created a sea-change in the business landscape. In simple terms lots of new opportunities we never had before because your friendly IT and compliance departments wouldnt let you!
  • #7: This chart is not meant to make your head spin but it probably will. Dont worry that you dont recognize all the logos I dont either. My analogy is that this shows all the runners and riders for the horse race as of year end 2017. All of these technologies work so I am not going to say use this one not that one. Different analogy, If these were baseball teams, some people prefer the Mets some the Yankees. You get to decide.
  • #8: Now jumping slightly ahead with forecasts out to 2021 which is when the current crop of CU undergrads will be entering the workforce. This is really good news for employment. There are more opportunities than we have grads. What makes me confident in that assertion? Well remember my prior figure of 7-8Billion people in the world. Well the Internet of Things will see us connecting 30-100Billion sensors and devices! Such as perhaps connecting devices my fridge in my kitchen with my bed, and my garbage pail, and my bathroom so they can happily share diagnostics and tell me in unison real time health problems my household may be experiencing this particular day. And by the way we scheduled your pills to be on your bedside table by the time you wake up tomorrow.
  • #9: Sounds futuristic? Well let be introduce you to Slack = searchable log of all conversation and knowledge OK Google : What is nineteen eighty four? Now this gets more interesting/or perhaps more scary depending on your personality. OK Google what is a slackbot? Bernie asked me to demo this if possible actually Im giving you two YouTube videos to watch (and you will want to watch them several times because believe me its all a bit of a blur. And my apologies the first one contains a stray swear word. Remember this app came into being really by accident it was a gossip channel within a failing internet startup, and for many people its seen just as a shorthand way to share emojis and cute cat videos during a boring meeting! So in some companies may be awkward silence if managers and HR start taking an interest!
  • #10: So this underlying technology the bot, or chatbot, represents the 2nd major change in the landscape [remember first was Bring Your Own Device to work which took power away from the IT folks for the good because we are now democratizing information] couple of logos you may recognize Kayak under travel and MailChimp under Communication. Look at how expanded this ecosystem is compared to prior collaboration tools circle seeing a blurring of the lines between functions and sectors and industries and especially between work and leisure (fun). Good news you can finally be shopping in Costco and nobody can tell the difference! No more pecking out emails on the train with everybody looking over your shoulder. So this is the exciting opportunity space that todays graduates are arriving into! Pioneer spirit, go stake your claim, and especially look to see who else you can work with or connect! More than that these bots are actually some of the first artificial intelligence you text what you want they go do it. The holy grail here is that one of the first bots allowed you to order pizza, which to this gen of techies is like an Apollo Moon Landing! And as ever there are good and bad implications. The technology is agnostic I guess you could say. But we need lots more liberal arts majors helping businesses make choices of what/should can we do with this technology?
  • #11: Sharepoint more traditional evolution of Microsoft products now finally question mark! integrated under Office 365 This is kind of the big incumbent being forced to mimic the more nimble upstarts. But it brings an important big business parental approval to the party. OK we have talked and we agree you now can go on Saturday night, but just remember our rules.
  • #12: Last but not least = Skype. Probably feel most comfortable with this. Skype for Business is getting into the bots capabilities. And these is a lot of AR augmented reality knocking at the door that will make this awkward me looking at myself and not the other person redundant. I have a tech background but have never found keyboard, mouse, or touchpad or 2Dcomputer screen other than an obstruction to work. Immersive video is the growth area already we have a gen that searches on YouTube more than Google. Subtle but hugely important shift to Show me, rather than Tell Me
  • #13: Model and reinforce team behaviors around dignity and respect. Be aware of time zones (good evening SG, good afternoon CH, good morning LA Be conscious of noise levels in room and language limitations. Commentary: To see our actuals for last month, I am going to move my cursor to top left and left click on the tab labeled Jan for January. Repeat and clarify questions. Clarify speakers: This is Chris in NY
  • #14: This photo just represents by putting a human face to it some of the positive effects of collaboration today. This was achieved through virtual mentoring as a technique using only Skype as the enabling technology. Today you dont have to be in the right place you can collaborate with anyone from anywhere! But as employers we tend to look for and value those people (we call them leaders) who have the potential to bring us and our companies into more of the right conversations at the right time!
  • #15: And that in a nutshell completes my whistlestop tour. We have a few minutes remaining for any questions, and if I dont answer your question today, shoot me an email and I will be happy to continue the conversation. Thank you!
