Why care?
Whether physicians are active on social media
or not, an understanding of social media and its
potential implications on their professional lives
is essential.

 Reid (CMA president 2012-2013)
referenced a number of recent
scientific studies showing how
multitasking has a negative
impact on cognitive functioning,
and how frequent use of the
Internet has a negative impact on
heart rate variability.
 Both Reid and Bezanson (second
year med student) argued that
rather than bringing people
together, social media and mobile
devices make people more prone
to social isolation.
The 2013 debate
 I find Twitter to be an
excellent source of positive
affirmations and
meditations that work well
for self-awareness and
mental health, he said. You
can find good feeds for
positive affirmation all over
the place.
