Expected results:
In addition to an initial Baseline Study,
describing every city’s challenges and
points of departure for improvement, the
URBACT project will deliver more
outputs: per city a Peer Review report
with recommendations, factsheets, two
case studies on the role of students and
on partnership for placemaking, two
Politicians’ Meetings, communication
items and a final report. The project
should help in shaping concrete solutions
and finding the necessary funding.

This document summarizes a presentation about using local census data to conduct neighborhood-level research in Canada. It discusses two examples: a pilot atlas of homelessness risk that mapped census data at the neighborhood level for three cities, and the Community Social Data Strategy, which provides municipalities and non-profits access to census and other data to understand social trends in their communities. We will also present the Danish think tank Future Libraries and their study Economic Value of Public Libraries Libraries of the Future – Knowledge, debate and Network The Danish Think Tank has the ambition to: • Produce knowledge, analysis and cross-disciplinary activities about the future role of the libraries • Generate professional, public and political debate and awareness of the role of libraries now and in the future A bottom-up initiative The Danish libraries face many challenges such as digitalization and changes in expectations and demands on both physical and digital services; lack of public awareness of library services, changes in library user behavior, lack of political awareness and changes in the role of the librarian. The Think Tank was initiated by the Danish Library Association (DB). The Think Tank is a two-year project, started October 2012, and co-financed by the participating libraries, library organizations and central library players The Economic Value of Public Libraries The Danish Think Tank Libraries of the Future & Copenhagen Economics has conducted the first study on the economic impact of the Danish public library. The Danish public libraries provide multiple services to the Danish public today, which overall seems to be well received by the public. However, the contributions are often measured in terms of library use (e.g. how many books were borrowed) and user satisfaction surveys, which are far from adequate when we want to discuss the role libraries play in modern society. The Agency for Sustainable Development and European Integration (ADDIE) was created in 2006 to advise on and support projects related to sustainable development, European integration, and cross-border cooperation in the Soroca district of Moldova. ADDIE has participated in 15 cross-border projects between 2004-2009 focused on issues like social services, education, economic development, and more. Key activities included training workshops, strategic planning, publishing materials, and conferences to support these projects and strengthen cross-border partnerships.

The Central European Initiative (CEI) is a regional intergovernmental forum that promotes cooperation across 18 Central European member states. For 25 years, the CEI has contributed to European integration in the region through multilateral diplomacy and project management. It provides funding and acts as both a donor and recipient on EU-funded projects, leveraging its resources to mobilize over 50 times their value in additional EU funding. Looking ahead, the CEI aims to strengthen scientific cooperation across the region and participate in the EU macro-regional strategies.

This document summarizes a conference on the role of intermediaries in promoting digital inclusion in the EU. The first session included a panel discussion on evidence of the role intermediaries play. Research was presented on over 2,700 eInclusion intermediaries mapped across the EU, showing they provide important social and economic services with limited resources. A second presentation summarized a survey across 17 EU countries finding that nearly 100 million Europeans visited a public library in the last year, and 14 million used libraries' computers and internet access, highlighting libraries' important role in digital inclusion and skills development.

This document summarizes a workshop on monitoring sustainable urban development plans using the Reference Framework for Sustainable Cities (RFSC) and open data. The workshop included presentations from Platform 31 on supporting cities' use of the RFSC, and from the cities of La Rochelle, Hradec Kralove, and Umeå on their experiences developing and monitoring sustainable urban development plans using the RFSC and open data. This document presents a consolidated assessment report on the Community Based Approach to Local Development Project implemented in Ukraine from 2007-2011. The Project aimed to improve living conditions in rural and semi-urban areas by promoting community-based initiatives and local governance. It established support structures that brought together local communities, councils, and authorities. Surveys found the approach strengthened self-governance and decision-making while improving infrastructure, services, and social cohesion. Over 1.2 million citizens benefited from community projects. The report recommends continuing the process and structures under a national framework to sustainably develop local communities in Ukraine.

In 2015, the Forum will take place on October 16-17 and focus specifically on projects and challenges within Moscow under economic crisis conditions. The second day will include lectures, workshops and exhibitions at the accompanying Urban Festival, which draws 5,000 people. Research presented will examine visions and trends for Moscow's new territories based on the dreams of residents. The Forum gathers 3,000-3,500 participants to discuss Moscow's urban agenda and share best practices.

1) UNDP Ukraine has implemented several local development programs since 2002 to promote decentralization and community involvement in local decision making, with increasing geographic scope. 2) The programs have helped establish community-led development approaches, build capacity of local authorities, and support over 2,000 communities in implementing 1,700 small-scale projects. 3) As a result, communities are becoming more active in local development and local authorities are applying community-based approaches, while central ministries are using the experience as a model for national replication.

It finds that about 2/3 of OECD metropolitan areas have a metropolitan governance body that typically focuses on spatial planning, transport, and economic development. However, governance structures vary widely between countries. The document also analyzes OECD data showing that higher administrative fragmentation within metropolitan areas is associated with lower productivity and greater inequality, while larger metropolitan areas tend to be more productive but also more unequal. Therefore, the document concludes that while cities can drive growth, governance is important to ensure the benefits are inclusive, and aligning policy objectives across different levels of government through metropolitan coordination can help target resources more effectively.

URBACT is a European programme that promotes integrated and sustainable urban development through transnational city networks. It facilitates exchange and learning between cities, draws lessons from their experiences, and supports policymakers in improving urban policies. The key activities are transnational city networks of 8-12 partners that work together for 33 months, with the goal of developing local action plans. Over 50 networks involving 400 European cities have participated to date. URBACT aims to strengthen exchange and learning, build urban policy capacity, and consolidate knowledge sharing going forward.

Challenges: The EUniverCities project wants to address the urban challenges in and around ten medium-sized European cities which share a common interest in developing and strengthening the co-operation between the city and university. Visualisation of a rebuilt seat of Veterinary Medicine Faculty Challenges in Lublin:  financial crisis  urban development  unemployment rate decreasing  population decline  brain drain Cities and universities increasingly realise that they can benefit both from more strategic and effective forms of cooperation.

6. Expected results: In addition to an initial Baseline Study, describing every city’s challenges and points of departure for improvement, the URBACT project will deliver more outputs: per city a Peer Review report with recommendations, factsheets, two case studies on the role of students and on partnership for placemaking, two Politicians’ Meetings, communication items and a final report. The project should help in shaping concrete solutions and finding the necessary funding.

Local Support Group and expected results in Lublin: 50 members – representing over 10 stakeholders work together in order to exchange knowledge, experience to each other  meetings helds February 2013 since the beginning of  divided into 3 subgroups (October 10, 2013)  3 thematic groups��: 1) How to keep and attract talents in Lublin 2) Urban issues – City - University 3) System of cooperation between universities and municipality  Peer Review Lublin (end of February)  Local Action Plan (end of April)
