WHY MENTOR?
Mentoring, at its core, guarantees young people that there
is someone who cares about them, assures them they are
not alone in dealing with day-to-day challenges, and makes
them feel like they matter.

WHAT IS A MENTOR?
A mentor is a caring adult or
peer that you can trust to tell
you the truth.

 Otherly  thinking about the warfare
of others.
Mentors do the following:
Spend time with mentee/s
Help mentees process
problems
Participate in activities that
promote good character
Mentors dont do the
following:
 Replace biological parents or guardians
 Work with them to help with child
 If parent is not in childs life you can help fill
the void
 Dont pay mentees  goal is to motivate
intrinsic motivation
 Dont be friends with mentee but a model
 Must gain trust and respect but keep level of
authority if mentee is not a peer.
Types of Mentoring:
 One on One  1 mentor to one
mentee
 Advantage: more quality time
 Disadvantage: Not enough mentor compared to
mentees and more mentor anxiety
 Group  1 mentor to every 5 mentees
 Advantage: more mentees can be involved,
Exposure to many different personalities, and
less mentor anxiety
 Disadvantage: Not enough quality time with
individuals
Types of Mentoring: cont.
 Cyber-Mentoring -
 Advantage: more mentees per mentors, no
physical place to meet. (should meet
periodically) Great for career development
mentoring
 Disadvantage: Not as personable
 STEM Mentoring
 Advantage: Activity to assist in building
relationships, Provides activities to make mentor
process more entertaining.
 Disadvantage: Beware of to much focus on
activity than mentoring process.

Peer Mentoring -
 Advantage: more possible mentors
 Disadvantage: keeping on task
