Belize is located in Central America on the northeast coast, bordered by Mexico, Guatemala, and the Caribbean Sea. The population is over 200,000 and consists of many ethnic groups, including Mestizos, Creole, Maya, and others. English is the official language, though Spanish and Creole are also widely spoken. Belize was originally home to the Maya civilization and later became a British colony. It gained independence in 1981. The culture is a blend of Caribbean, Maya, and European influences seen in the music, dance, religion, and food. Popular attractions include scuba diving in the second largest barrier reef in the world and visiting ancient Maya ruins.
