Bihu
Bihu is the national festival of Assam. This is celebrated by Assamese of all caste,creed and religion.
Bihu was originally an agricultural festival. The orgin of Bihu is beleived to be the Sanskrit word 
Bishuban which means  the part of the year with days and nghts being equal. Some are of the opinion
that it is formed from Bai(meaning worship) and Hu (meaning cow).Anotherschool of thought believes
that it is formed from Bi (meaning worship) and shu (meaning peace and prosperity). Some say that the
word means "donation or endowment".
There are 3 types of Bihu 
(a) Bahag Bihu or Rangali Bihu
Bahag Bihu is celebrated at the beginning of the spring season (Chaitra Sankranti  April) ,
celebrated across 7 days. It is also known as seven Bihu. This is celebrated by farmers for
cultivationof rice crop. Cowis worshipped asapart of this Bihu.The 2nd
day of Bahag Bihuis
celebrated as the Assamese New Year. Rangali Bihu, a festival of joy, comprises of various
types of celebrations including dance festivals.
(b) Kati Bihu or Kangali Bihu
Kati Bihu iscelebratedonKartikSankranti (Autumnseason - Octoberor November) afterthe
cultivationseasonof rice.Since,mostof the farmersare notleftwithanyrice cropduringthis
part of the year,it isalsoknownas Pooror Kangali Bihu.The festivalcomprisesof plantingof
Tulsi (anauspiciousplantinHinduism).EarthenlightcalleddiyaisshowntoTulsi andthento
the plantedrice cropforblessingsfromthe almighty.Thisfestival endswith feastingof alocal
delicacy called Peetha, made from rice and lentils.
(c) Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu
Magh Bihuis celebratedinthe wintermonthof Magh.The orginof thisBihuis fromthe word
Bhoh or consumption and continues for 3 days. This festival celebration includes
construction of hut near rivers from straw, lighting of fire called Meji,dancing and singing
and feastinginthe evening.Rural gameslike buffalofightingandcockfightingare partof this
festival.
