The mandatory price reporting system for pork reported much more volume and many more pork cut prices than the previous voluntary system. The mandatory report included prices for 114 cuts while the voluntary only included 24 cuts. Additionally, the mandatory system reported over 500 loads of product while the voluntary typically reported under 100 loads. Surprisingly, the cutout value from the mandatory system was higher than the voluntary system, contrary to expectations. There is now more pricing information available but differences between the new mandatory and old voluntary systems could still cause issues for pricing contracts.
