Biosphere and
biomes
Matlolokwe MT
Lesson objectives
• The concept of biosphere
• Three components of the biosphere
• Interconnection between the biosphere
• Different types of Biomes
Concept of
biosphere
Biosphere is part of the earth’s
surface where humans and other
living organisms are able to live
Biosphere extentds about 7-8000
meters above sea and 6-8000 m
below sea level.
It is made up of three
components
The three components of the
biosphere
Atmosphere Lithosphere hydrosphere
3 Components of the biosphere
Atmosphere
• Is the envelope of gasses surrounding the earth.
• Mainy made up of 71% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.03
Carbon dioxide, the rest is water vapour and other
gases.((joshiaadi, 2014)
• It filters the sunlight to protect the living things from
the harmful solar radiation
(joshiaadi, 2014)
Hydrosphere Part of earth that consists of
water, e.g rivers and oceans.
Hydrosphere is made up of 3%
fresh water and the remaining
97% is salt water. (Laura
Salvador, 2012)
Water is needed for survival of
living organisms
It’s a habitat for many aquatic
plants( microscopic Plankton) and
animals such as fish and sharks
Lithosphere
• It’s the outside crust of the earth
• Made up of rocks and soil
• It is the source of minerals for living organisms
• It is a habitat for many living organisms(Laura
Salvador, 2012)
Interconnection of the spheres
• All can support life individually.
• Use respiration and photosynthesis.
Biomes
• Biome is a large area with specific climate(abiotic),
it contains specific kinds of plants and
animals(biotic component).
• It is made up of several ecosystems(Donald
Johnson, 2008)
Types of biomes
• Terrestrial
• Aquatic
Terestrial biomes(Silvia Huber,
2017)
Forest Fynbos Grassland
Nama
Karoo
Savannah
Succulent
karoo
Thicket
Aquatic Biomes
It divided into two biomes :
• Fresh water biome- dams, lakes, lakes and
wetland
• Marine biome-Sandy shores, Rocky shores,
Coral reefs, Mangrove swamps, eustaries,
ocean and open seas
