This document summarizes a seminar on sandwich composite materials. Sandwich composites consist of two thin, stiff skins bonded to a lightweight, thick core material. Common core materials include foams, wood, and honeycomb structures. The core provides bending stiffness while the skins provide strength, resulting in an overall lightweight, strong material. Some key applications mentioned include construction, vehicles, aerospace, and insulation panels. The document provides details on different types of sandwich panels used in various industries.
A caisson is a watertight retaining structure used in construction projects involving water, such as bridge piers or dams. There are several types of caissons including box, open, and compressed-air (pneumatic) caissons. Box caissons are prefabricated concrete boxes that are placed on a prepared base. Open caissons have vertical walls but no top or bottom, acting as a protective structure during excavation. Compressed-air caissons trap workers in compressed air to provide dry working conditions when building in water. Special precautions must be taken with compressed-air caissons to prevent decompression sickness in workers.
Hollow concrete blocks are large rectangular bricks used in construction. They are made from Portland cement, aggregate like sand and gravel, and have one or more hollow cores, making them over 50% solid. Standard blocks come in full and half sizes, with full blocks being rectangular with two cores and half blocks being cubical with one core. The manufacturing process involves mixing raw materials, molding blocks, vibrating and compacting, curing and drying, and packing. Hollow blocks provide benefits like durability, low maintenance, fire resistance, insulation, cost effectiveness, and being environmentally friendly.
Soil cement is a construction material made by mixing soil, cement, and water. It has good compressive strength but low tensile strength, making it prone to cracking. Soil cement can be used to reinforce road bases and salvage failing gravel roads in an efficient and economical way. Laboratory tests are conducted to determine the right proportions of soil, cement, and water for the project. Soil cement differs from concrete in that it binds soil particles together rather than just aggregates. It forms a rigid slab that distributes loads well and resists damage from weathering.
M sand difference between river sand and m sand & Manufactured sand- properti...Denish Jangid
油
Manufactured sand (M-Sand) is produced by crushing granite stone in impact crushers. It is a substitute for river sand in concrete construction. M-Sand has cubical shapes with grounded edges and is washed and graded to less than 4.75mm. It is used as river sand deposits are being depleted and M-Sand addresses issues like availability, transportation costs, and quality variations in river sand. M-Sand improves the strength, durability, and workability of concrete while reducing construction defects and costs. It is a more sustainable alternative to river sand for concrete.

Gypsum is a soft sulfate mineral composed of calcium sulfate dihydrated. It is commonly found in nature and can be extracted and processed for use in construction. The manufacturing process of plaster of Paris (calcium sulfate hemihydrate) involves mining gypsum rock, crushing it, drying and powdering it, then calcining it at high temperatures to remove water molecules. This is then used to make gypsum board, which involves mixing the calcined gypsum powder with water and adding it between facing sheets to form panels. Gypsum board has advantages such as ease of installation, fire resistance, sound isolation and is commonly used for walls and ceilings in buildings.

Catalytic fines are small particles of catalyst that escape from the fluid catalytic cracking process in oil refineries. They are 20-100 microns in size and can cause damage to ship engines if not removed from fuel oil. Fuel handling equipment like centrifuges must reduce catalytic fine levels from 80 ppm in received fuel to 15 ppm or less before fuel reaches the engine. Proper fuel storage, settling, and handling can help remove fines and prevent engine damage. Refineries are increasingly pushing limits of catalytic fines in fuel as they work to extract more distillates from crude oil.

OVERVIEW
Bitumen is produced from selected crude oils through a process of fractional distillation. The crude oil is heated to temperatures of between 300
and 350 degrees Celsius and fed into a distillation column allowing the lightest fractions of the crude to separate, through vaporization, from the
heavier fractions, which remain liquid. The higher boiling point fractions are then drawn-off via a heat exchanger and enter a vacuum distillation
column. This process produces a short residue that is used to manufacture several grades of bitumen. The pressure and temperature conditions
within the vacuum process will determine the hardness of the short residue, and as such the grade of bitumen produced. The short residue may be
further modified by air blowing in which air is passed through the residue at temperatures of 250 300 degrees Celsius.
Penetration Grade Determination
The Penetration Test determines the hardness of Bitumen by measuring the depth (in tenths of a mm) to which a standard, and loaded needle will
vertically penetrate in 5 seconds, a sample of Bitumen maintained at a temperature of 25属C. Hence the softer the bitumen, the greater will be its
number of penetration units.

Cutback Bitumen
Cutback Bitumen (Liquid Bitumen) is Bitumen that is dissolved in a solvent . Typical solvents include
Naptha, gasoline and kerosene, white spirit etc. The type of solvent controls the curing time while
the amount determines the viscosity of the Cutback Bitumen.
The advantage Cutbacks have over Emulsions is a much higher residual Bitumen percent, typically
over 80% compares with over 40-65% for Bitumen emulsions. The result is more Bitumen left on the
roadway after curing, for the same volume of binder applied.
Cutback Classification
Cutbacks are divided into two classifications,
Rapid-Curing (RC) and Medium-Curing (MC)
depending on the solvent used.
They are further defined by a number
which indicates the minimum kinematic
viscosity(fluidity) of the cutback.

7. Bitumen Emulsion
Bitumen emulsions generally belong to the oil-in-water type of
emulsions where bitumen is dispersed in water with the aid of a small
quantity of emulsifying agent. The agent stabilises the bitumen particles
under normal conditions of storage. Bitumen emulsions derive their main
use in road construction and maintenance because of their safety, ease in
handling and excellent adhesion properties.
Advantages
The advantage of water based bitumen emulsion is that it allows bitumen, which is
semi-solid unless heated, to be handled and applied at low temperatures. Following
application of an emulsion, it undergoes a breaking or setting process where the
bitumen droplets combine to deposit the bitumen on the paving aggregate as a film.
By contrast, cutback bitumen contains a significant proportion of cutter (kerosene), to
reduce the viscosity of the bitumen and help coat the aggregates. The cutter must then
evaporate before the bitumen is left behind as a film on the stone. This evaporation process
can take many months. If the cutter is still present when the final surfacing is applied, this can
result in flushing of the pavement and resultant loss of surface texture and skid resistance.

Type & Grades of Emulsions
The emulsion type refers to the nature
of the mechanism used to stabilise the
emulsion. Emulsions generally fall into
either cationic or anionic types. The
grade relates to the degree of mixing
stability. Grades within each type can be
modified with regard to the nature of the
base bitumen and rate of break or set
(deposition of bitumen droplets in contact
with mineral aggregates) depending on the
specific application requirement.

OXIDISED BITUMEN
OXIDIZED BITUMEN
Industrial bitumens (or oxidized bitumens) are made by blowing air through hot paving grade bitumen.
The so-called blowing process results in harder bitumen that softens at a higher temperature
than that at which paving grade bitumen softens. Industrial bitumens also have more rubber-like
properties and their viscosities are much less affected by changes in temperature than is the case
with paving grade bitumen. Hard bitumen under controlled temperature conditions is widely used
as an anti-slip layer compound in the piling industry, for manufacture of roofing felts, the roofing and
waterproofing industries, for sound dampening felts and under carriage sealant in
the automotive industry, electric cable joint protection, joint filling compound, sealant compound
and many others. Also used in sealing saw cuts and joints where expected movements are minimum.
Some of the major advantages of Oxidized Bitumen are that it is completely water resistant,
highly flexible and durable. Further, it is chemically very stable. Oxidized bitumen is a very flexible
compound that is not only chemically stable but also a very durable compound apart from being
completely water resistant. Lastly, Oxidized Bitumen has some very prominent technical advantages
that makes it a very sought after compound in various applications.
The most popular grades are; grades 95/25, 85/25, 90/40, and 115/15.
We are also capable of producing and supplying other grades of Oxidized Bitumen according to the
specifications of individual clients.
Uses & Applications
Oxidized Bitumen high softening
temperatures qualify them as excellent
sealant for prevention from bleeding in high
temperature applications. Oxidized Bitumen
is predominantly used in the piling industry
as an anti slip compound for the manufacture
of under carriage sealants in the automobile
industry. It is also used as a sealant
compound, as a joint filling compound
apart from being used in the manufacture
of roofing felts and sound dampening felts.
Further, Oxidized Bitumen is used in the
manufacture of bituminous marine mastic,
which is required for the oil and gas pipeline
joints. Some of the application of the
oxidized bitumen are as follows
roofing and waterproofing industries
carpet-backing
corrosion protection
acoustic panels
manufacture of paints

9. TANKER | BULK SUPPLY
Bitumen Tanker availability on some Global Markets is quite tight and insufficient vessels are
available, however making use of our good network of ship owners, tanker operators and our
integrated own shipping team will assist our clients to materialize bulk supplies. The company also
has strong relationships with many refiners of bitumen both small and large throughout the world
and is therefore able to offer a wide range of supply solutions.
Our shipping team ensures best freight rates for voyage charters or time charters and will assist our
clients to meet their Bitumen requisitions. Bulk bitumen cargoes can be supplied in tankers ranging
in size between 1,000 and 8,000 metric tons. We can supply on a Delivered ex-Ship, CIF, C&F or
FOB basis depending on the customers needs. While most deliveries by tanker will be direct into
a tank terminal, we can arrange for discharge into trucks if a terminal with pipeline connection to a
jetty is not available.
Our quality assurance team will implement and engage appropriate quality control measures to
maintain the quality of the bitumen shipped throughout the voyage so that our clients may receive
quality bitumen at their destination terminals. In bulk shipments we appoint internationally reputed
inspection company to carry out Bitumen quality inspections and certifications for the clients from
point of loading to point of delivery.
Thanks to our wide range of contacts we endeavour to offer supply of bitumen complying with the
clients local specifications rather than delivering a generic grade. In order to support this service
we can arrange testing and analysis of bitumen prior to conclusion of a contract in order to ensure
that the product will meet customer requirements.
Factors affecting Ocean Freight Rates
Understanding ocean freight rates and the
ways and means of its applicability is important
because if a shipper undertakes to transport
the goods without proper knowledge, then he
could end up making a huge loss. The following
are the factors affecting ocean freight rates
1. Intended destination: The destination is
a factor when calculating ocean freight
rates. Longer the journey, the exorbitant
the ocean shipping rates and vice-versa
as mostly the Bitumen vessel after
discharging returns empty to the source.
2. Service Charges: Any extra charge
levied by port authorities like the security
service charges also tends to affect the
ocean freight rate
3. Season: During monsoon season
thedemand for Bitumen is low and the
vessels are ideal, hence the vessel owner
or operator try to recover costing during
the peak season.
4. Terminal Fees: The ocean freight also
depends on the terminal fees to be
paid while embarking the journey from
a port and after reaching the intended
destination.
5. Bunker Price: Rising fuel prices and the
latest prevailing fuel rates will affect the
freight charges
6. Vessel Capacity: If the shipper does not
have enough goods to fill the vessel to
their optimum capacity, it will affect the
freight charges by way of the shipper
having to pay more in spite of lesser
quantity

10. PACKING |
POLYBAG/BITUBAG
The Bag is a self-stabilizing flexible container made of an outer plastic bag and an inner liner. The
bag is designed to carry road paving or industrial bitumen, taking into account of the visco-elastic
flow characteristics at (solid) storage and transport conditions. While filling the bags the bitumen is
exactly cooled down to a temperature slightly higher than the softening point of the bitumen and
lower than the melting point of the plastic material of the container.
It is suitable for packing in liquid condition at ideal product temperature. The inner liner bag is made
of a meltable plastic film. Bag volume and shape are designed for maximum loading of normal
seagoing standard containers and road trucks. This mode of packing allows economical supply of

11. POLYBAG/BITUBAG | STEEL DRUMS | ISO CONTAINER/ BITUTAINER
ISO Container / Bitutainer
These are essentially containers designed for shipment of bitumen in larger
quantities and in containerized form. In certain locations, such as developing
countries or in small islands where bulk bitumen receiving facilities do not exist
supply of bitumen in an ocean tanker is not possible. The needs of customers in
such locations can be met using ISO tank containers with a capacity of 20 MT.
Supply in Containers usually requires the customer to commit to receiving bitumen
on an on-going basis because of the need to set up facilities for the discharge of
the containers. Typically tonnage might range from 20 MT - 500 MT per month
depending on location and the customers needs. Projects which require large
volumes in a short period can be accommodated using a combination of supply
by tanker into bitumen containers, temporary storage in portable tanks or a
bitumen barge for example. Again, our focus is on accommodating the customers
needs in the most efficient manner. All containers meet all International Maritime
rules, regulations and classifications and are certified by Lloyds or other
internationally accepted certifying bodies for containers used in International
Maritime Containerized Shipments. All Bitumen Containers supplied are highly
isolated and ensure the quality of the Bitumen transported and or stored in them
is maintained throughout the operations they are intended for.
