A 15-year old boy named Stephanus Erasmus Jacobs discovered diamonds on a farm in South Africa, revealing the origin of blood diamonds. During civil wars in countries like Liberia, child soldiers as young as 5 or 10 years old have been forced or coerced to fight for militias, becoming some of the most feared troops in the war zones.

This led to an explosion of interest in – and questions about – the ingredient after high-profile British athletes won multiple gold medals.
