Twenty One Pilots - Blurryface

This is the album cover for Twenty One Pilots –
Blurryface. The front cover of the album has
decided on using a colour scheme of red, black,
grey and white, these colours are a recognisable
motif of the band.
The album cover has opted to not include the band
on the cover of the album, however, this does not
hinder fans recognising which album the band
belongs to as the fans could recognise it from the
colour scheme alone.
The cover also contains a 9 circles
on a 3 x 3 formation. Each circle
includes a pattern that is separate
to the other, the band said that the
cover contained a deeper meaning.
The meaning of each circle is that
they’re meant to represent one of 9
songs that are contained in the
album, this is based on the idea that
each pattern is shown on the audio
only version of each song. The red,
black, grey and white is possibly
done to represent a rebellious
attitude and style as the lead singer,
Tyler Joseph stated that he had to
fight to make it into the music
industry.
The name of the band is not the
most prominent part of the cover,
however, it includes the name at
the top of the cover. The font on the
cover makes it clear to read and see
as the white font on the black
background assists in making it
easier to see it also includes the
style of the band of having the line
through the O’s. The reason for this
may be due to the fact that they
wish to put forward a message that
the alternative genre as a whole is
not as popular for people compared
to other genres, however, the white
font making the titles easier to read
could be a homage to the fans that
they are the reason they have been
able to get this successful in pursing
a career in music and become so
popular in recent years.

The back of the album follows the
conventions of the an album as it includes the
songs that are available in the album, they are
very prominent in comparison to the rest of
the text that has been included on the back
cover. The titles all include their iconic band
name style, as each title of the song includes
a line going through each “O”.
Each colour represents a different member of
the duo as the red represents the drummer
and the white line represents the lead singer
of the duo, this is used to represent
themselves with and promote the style of
their brand to make it easier to people to
identify all the products they produce.

The album front cover includes
the bands name very
prominently visible with the
iconic style for the title of the
band, this is done to help
further promote their brand to
new fans and already
established fans will be able to
notice who created the album
based on this simple fact.
The album includes a pair of
hands being held together with
twine and a bird trying to take
off and fly. The meaning behind
this can be interpreted as a
album full of illusions as the
name Smoke + Mirrors are can
be associated with magicians.
Although it is faintly seem there seems to be cracks or more twine around the hand
and bird, the twine can be used to symbolise the industry trying to have control over
the band as the hands are trying to reach for the bird, this symbolises the band as it
shows broken pieces of twine around the bird meaning that they have broken free
from the constraints of an industry and this is shown in this album as they are able to
feel free with their imagination when making the songs for this album.

The back of the album is quite
simplistic in style as it only
includes the name of each of
the songs that are included on
the album.
There is however a symbol of
an cross, this can be used to
symbolise notions of being a
positive album and that people
can expect the album to
contain songs that although
may sound depressing are
actually sung in order to make
people feel positively.

The album includes the bands
album but instead they have
opted to place their band name
on the top left of the cover
rather than being the in the
centre where most of the
attention is drawn for the person
that is viewing the album. This is
because the band wants to put
more of a emphasis on the
intertextual reference behind
the album cover.
The bands name includes their
iconic style of font, this in part
helps fans identify their work
easier.
The album takes inspiration from
old fashioned Japanese art, this
is quite a key factor into the way
they feel about their work as the
art is considered a powerful
form of expression for the
Japanese. They wrote with a
brush rather than a pen as they
are more familiar with brush
techniques, this is supposed to
make the band show the fans
that they find music a more
familiar way to express
themselves when compared to
other methods, as the title of
the album also shows that they
are able to make it feel like a
more personal form of
expression.

The back cover of the album
includes the titles of the songs in
on the left and given a style of
font that makes it look like they
have personally written on each
and every album for the fans
that buy it.
The Japanese women that is faintly seen in
the background further promotes the
intertextual reference that their album
made links to Japan.
