SCHOLARLY MUSIC EDITIONS
Uses include:
• Analysing a work for an essay – you’d want to use the
most ‘correct’ scholarly edition available.
• Preparing a performance which you want to be as
‘authentic’ as possible – looking at the composer’s
original wishes e.g. whether ornamentation is original or
added later.
• Collected editions: accessing obscure repertoire –
perhaps the piece you want isn’t published separately.

• To find out how to format your citations and references, read
the Citation Guide/House Style in the Music Faculty Study

WHY REFERENCE?
• Referencing enables you to acknowledge the work of
others and avoid plagiarism.
• Referencing allows you to inform your readers of the
sources you used so they can find them too.
• Referencing lets you demonstrate that you have read
widely and get better marks.
• Referencing helps you reinforce and lend authority and
credibility to your arguments.
• Referencing separates your ideas from the ideas of
others and shows clearly when you are comparing and
analysing different people’s ideas.

• Access QuickSearch via Links menu > Library Links on
Moodle. From home, enter your Trinity Laban login (same as
for Moodle).

TIPS
• Look carefully at your results to choose what to read
or whether to modify your search.
• Use the Source Types filter to choose between audio,
video, scores or written information.
• Use “double quotes” around search keywords to find
that exact phrase.
• Think carefully about keywords especially where they
have non-musical meanings!
• Experiment with other filters/disciplines to see what
you find.

WHY USE QUICKSEARCH INSTEAD OF GOOGLE
AND GROVE INSTEAD OF WIKIPEDIA?
• Reliable: have been edited and written by experts in the
field; safe to cite in work
• Study-focused: Google results include sites trying to
sell things, these resources are for research;
• Detailed: more in-depth
• Quicker: answers found via Google/Wikipedia need to
be double-checked.
