MUSIC HISTORY IN CONTEXT
INFO SKILLS 2: REFINE
AIM
To enable you to choose appropriate library resources to
prepare performances and research assignments,
referencing appropriately.
STRUCTURE OF SESSION

2. Referencing when and why?
3. Online resources and identifying references
4. Quiz
1. SCHOLARLY MUSIC EDITIONS
COMPARING MUSIC EDITIONS
1. What differences can you see between
the two scores?
2. Why are there differences?
SCHOLARLY MUSIC EDITIONS
A term used to describe a modern edition of
music which embodies the composer's original
intent with minimal editorial interference.
Alison Latham, Urtext in The Oxford Companion to Music. Oxford University Press,
<http://www.oxfordreference.com/view/10.1093/acref/9780199579037.001.0001/acref-
9780199579037-e-7041> (accessed January 7, 2019).
Urtext (German: original text)
FACSIMILES AND COLLECTED EDITIONS
Collected editions
Scholarly edition either of all the works by
one composer, or works by different but
related composers.
Facsimile editions
Reproductions of original manuscripts
[image from Webern, Anton von. Sketches (1926-1945),
(facsimile). Commentary by Ernst Krenek. New York: Carl
Fischer, 1968. Plate 5]
In the librarys reference collection in the North Library.
SCHOLARLY MUSIC EDITIONS
Uses include:
Analysing a work for an essay youd want to use the
most correct scholarly edition available.
Preparing a performance which you want to be as
authentic as possible looking at the composers
original wishes e.g. whether ornamentation is original or
added later.
 Collected editions: accessing obscure repertoire
perhaps the piece you want isnt published separately.

occur outside of schools and other formal education
settings.

similarity between these phrases in the first and last
movements which I decided to accentuate.
No
WHEN TO REFERENCE
To find out how to format your citations and references, read
the Citation Guide/House Style in the Music Faculty Study
menu on Moodle.
WHY REFERENCE?
Referencing enables you to acknowledge the work of
others and avoid plagiarism.
Referencing allows you to inform your readers of the
sources you used so they can find them too.
Referencing lets you demonstrate that you have read
widely and get better marks.
Referencing helps you reinforce and lend authority and
credibility to your arguments.
Referencing separates your ideas from the ideas of
others and shows clearly when you are comparing and
analysing different peoples ideas.
Based on material from Citing it right: Introducing referencing by the University of
Manchester Library, available via a Creative Commons BY-NC 3.0 licence.
3. ONLINE RESOURCES AND
IDENTIFYING REFERENCES
A dictionary containing
facts and information
about music e.g.
 Composers (and their
works)
 Wider musical subjects
e.g. string quartets
ONLINE RESOURCES
GROVE MUSIC ONLINE QUICKSEARCH

together various sources
of online research,
recordings and scores

Use it to find information about composers and
pieces, e.g. for programme notes.
Search by composer.
GROVE MUSIC ONLINE
Access via Moodle > Links menu > Library Links >

Book
IDENTIFYING DIFFERENT TYPES OF SOURCE
Book chapter
Journal article
QUICKSEARCH
Search for in-depth music information e.g. journal articles
Find online scores, audio and video recordings
Access QuickSearch via Links menu > Library Links on
Moodle. From home, enter your Trinity Laban login (same as
for Moodle).
QUICKSEARCH
TIPS
Look carefully at your results to choose what to read
or whether to modify your search.
Use the Source Types filter to choose between audio,
video, scores or written information.
Use double quotes around search keywords to find
that exact phrase.
Think carefully about keywords especially where they
have non-musical meanings!
Experiment with other filters/disciplines to see what
you find.
WHY USE QUICKSEARCH INSTEAD OF GOOGLE
AND GROVE INSTEAD OF WIKIPEDIA?
Reliable: have been edited and written by experts in the
field; safe to cite in work
Study-focused: Google results include sites trying to
sell things, these resources are for research;
 Detailed: more in-depth
Quicker: answers found via Google/Wikipedia need to
be double-checked.
4. QUIZ
SUMMARY
You should now
1. Be aware of scholarly music editions in the library.
2. Be able to find information about a composer and piece
of music on Grove Music Online.
3. Understand a citation in a bibliography.
4. Be able to search for music information on
QuickSearch.
5. Know when to add footnote references to your own
writing.
6. Know where to get help with finding resources.
