WHAT IS BODY LANGUAGE?
Body language is a type of nonverbal
communication in which physical behaviors,
as opposed to words, are used to express or
convey information. Such behavior includes
facial expressions, body posture, gestures, eye
movement, touch and the use of space.
HOW MUCH COMMUNICATION IS NOT
VERBAL?
We communicate on three levels:
 Verbal
 Non-verbal
 Paralanguage
(the way we use our voice to add meaning
to our message)

HOW TO READ BODY LANGUAGE?
 STUDY THE EYES
 GAZE AT THE FACE – BODY LANGUAGE TOUCHING MOUTH OR SMILING
 PAY ATTENTIONTO PROXIMITY
 SEE IF THE OTHER PERSON IS MIRRORING YOU
 OBSERVE THE HEAD MOVEMENT
 LOOK AT THE OTHER PERSON’S FEET
 WATCH FOR HAND SIGNALS
 EXAMINE THE POSITION OF THE ARMS
HOW TO IMPROVE BODY LANGUAGE?
THESE TECHNIQUES CAN DEFINITELY HELP IN IMPROVE BODY LANGUAGE:
 MAKE EYE CONTACT
 LEARN FROM YOUR COLLEAGUES
 WATCH YOUR BODY POSITION
 RELAX YOUR SHOULDERS
 GIVE A FIRM HANDSHAKE
 KEEP YOUR HANDS VISIBLE
 RELAX
HAND AND BODY MOVEMENTS
BODY MOVEMENTS ARE ALWAYS DESCRIBED IN RELATION
TO THE ANATOMICAL POSITION OF THE BODY.
ON THE OTHER HAND, HAND MOVEMENTS ARE QUITE
INVOLUNTARY IN NATURE. HOWEVER, THEY TELL US A LOT
ABOUT THE OTHER PERSON WHO IS USING HIS OR HER
HANDS WHILE TALKING.

THERE ARE RULES FOR POSITIVE BODY LANGUAGE EVEN IN CASE OF MOVEMENT OF HANDS.
RULE 1: OPEN YOUR PALMS
RULE 2: UNCROSS THE ARMS
RULE 3: DON’T GRIP YOUR ARMS
RULE 4: ZERO ARM BARRIERS
RULE 5: PARALLEL OVER PERPENDICULAR
BODY MOVEMENTS
HERE ARE SOME OF THE BEST BODY MOVEMENTS GESTURES:
STEP FORWARD WHEN DELIVERING KEY POINTS.
AIM FOR LEFT-RIGHT BALANCE.
POSITION YOURSELF IN FRONT OF THE SCREEN
WALK TO A FLIP CHART OR A WHITEBOARD.
WALK INTO AUDIENCE AREA DURING A GROUP EXERCISE
DISTRIBUTE A HANDOUT.
